MailTips not working intermttienly RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We recently switched over from TMG to a Kemp load balancer, and MailTips stopped working intermittently. Because there are Outlook for Mac 2011 clients, I had to disable the X-Forwarded-For and Via  headers on the load balancer to allow them to connect to Exchange. I am not sure if that has anything to do with the issue. I have provided the results of the Outlook log (from Outlook 2010 on a Windows client) and there is an error related to MailTips. I am not sure why autodiscvoermydomain.com is used for EWS and not mail.mydomain.com. All mailboxes live on Exchange 2010, but we have cut over to Exchange 2016 for the front end. Any ideas?

  • Hi,

To narrow down the scope of this issue, I would like to confirm information with you:

    1. How many Exchange servers in your environment? What’s the topology in your environment?
    2. By saying “MailTips stopped working intermittently“ do you mean the MailTips sometime didn’t show up? Could you please capture a snapshot to me?
    3. You mentioned “All mailboxes live on Exchange 2010, but we have cut over to Exchange 2016 for the front end. Any ideas?”, could you please elaborate how you did this?
    4. This issue is affected all users in your environment, right? Include the Windows client users and the Mac users, right?
    5. Is this issue affected all Outlook version including the Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016?

To determine if this issue could be related to the X-Forwarded-For and Via headers on the load balancer, if it is possible, please help us try to enable it to test. Meanwhile, please try to use OWA to test.

    Best Regards,
    Niko Cheng

  • 1.) There are 7 Exchange servers in the environment. 2 2010 CAS/HT 2 2010 MBX (in a DAG) 1 dedicated Public Folder MBX server and 2 2016 servers in a DAG.

2.) That is right - sometimes MailTips show correctly sometimes they display the error. here is a screenshot

3.) I changed the DNS records for autodiscover.mydomain.com and mail.mydomain.com to point to the VIP address for Exchange 2016 on the Kemp. (Previously they pointed to the VIP address for Exchange2010 on TMG.

4.) All users are affected, but again only intermittently. There are no production mailboxes on 2016 servers though.

5.) Only Outlook 2010 is in the environment. It has the latest patches / updates. See the screenshot below.

We can’t enable the X-Forwarded-For and Via headers until we get a test IP. OWA works fine, doesn’t have the MailTips issue at all, and redirection from the 2016 login to the 2010 mailbox works as expected.

  • Update: I got a test IP, and the issue is still there after using the default X-Forwarded-For and Via headers.

  • Hi,

Since this issue not affected OWA, and this issue is occurred intermittently.

Based on my experience, this issue could be related to the cached under your Outlook profile.

In this case, to determine if this issue could be related to the cached, I suggest you choose 2-3 computers, and then configure the Outlook 2010 with online mode and then monitor few hours.

If the issue persist, I suggest you refer to the following article to creating a new Outlook profile.

  • I tried new profiles and taking the clients out of cache mode, but it is still an issue and it goes away immediately when I use the hosts file to bypass the load balancer. I am working with Kemp.

We are having the exact same issue. May I know if you have solved it and how?

    Thanks!
