Dell Studio XPS 8100, Windows 7 "Program Not Responding"/Hang Problem


  • Hi,

    I’ve had a long-term, nagging problem in which my programs frequently “hang.”  I receive the message, "Program Not Responding,” when this occurs.  Typically, after about a 10-20 second delay, the command will be successfully executed.  

    Among the programs in which this commonly occurs are Internet browsers (IE and Firefox) and Microsoft Word.

    I have a 64-bit Dell Studio XPS 8100 desktop computer running on Windows 7.  

    On a typical day I use:
    MS Excel/Outlook/Word
    Adobe Acrobat

    On a typical day, I’m running:
    Dell DataSafe

    Remedies Tried
    Run Scandisk
    Update to latest Windows Updates
    Update Dell Drivers
    Run Disk Defrag
    Update Firefox
    Run Glarysoft Registry Repair
    Disable Windows Search in services.msc
    Disable Windows Defender
    Repair MS Office

    I’d appreciate any advice or assistance.

    Since this problem occurs on multi-program, I suggest that you perform a Clean Boot then check the issue again.

    Note: Clean Boot is a step of troubleshooting, we can go back to normal by running MSCONIFG.

    If the issue persists, please use Windows Memory Diagnostic to check the memory. And scan the virus on your machine.

  • this program 'hang up' happens to me all the time, no matter how often I reboot (yes from a cold machine that has been unplugged). Is this a bug with a forthcoming patch?
