Windows XP Home Error Message and Fix

  • I get a critical battery alert from Windows XP, and a "Prepare to Standby" message. The computer screen freezes and I can only manually reboot by turning off the power.

This is my desk top computer. I do have an APC power back up system.

Is this a Windows problem or an APC problem?

If it is a Windows problem, what is the recommended fix?

  • One sure-fire way to fine out if it's a Windows problem or an APC problem:

Uninstall the APC UPS via the Device Manager, completely remove it from your system, and then plug your system into a regular wall outlet.  If your system starts up and runs normally then that should narrow it down to being a problem with the APC UPS unit (battery could need replacement).
