Windows Update CheckSUR.exe crashes

    Question

  • Windows Update is using CheckSUR.exe to repair inconsistencies in my SP1 system due to a conflict found in the Windows Servicing Store, but CheckSUR.exe itself crashes with error code FF. Does anyone know what can be done to diagnose and clean up my system?

Here are my CheckSUR.exe Log entries. They are not complete because CheckSUR crashes.

  • Hey afritzse

Can you zip all following files/directories,

         %windir%\logs\cbs\
        %windir%\WindowsUpdate*.log
        %windir%\inf\setupapi.dev.log
        %windir%\winsxs\poqexec.log (if exists)
        %windir%\winsxs\pending.* (if exists)
        %windir%\Performance\WinSAT\Datastore\
        %windir%\System32\winevt\Logs\application.evtx
        %windir%\logs\CBS\CheckSUR*.log

And upload them to https://sftus.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=3d937ce2-2848-46cf-95fb-232942029a08 using the password "6QyYE8JYpd-E)"? These logs will help us find the root cause of this issue. Please include your forum alias in the zip files so I it’s yours.

    Thanks,

  • Hello Everybody

I have the same problem with the last Windows Update and the CheckSUR.exe. But the CheckSUR.exe itself crashes with the same Error Code FF.

The Application Error in the Eventlog is following:

    Failing Application CheckSUR.exe, Version 6.0.6001.22201, Timestamp 0x48508fd5, Faulting Modul ntdll.dll, Version 6.0.6001.18000, Timestamp 0x4791a7a6, Exception Code 0xc0000374, Erroroffset 0x000b015d, Prozess-ID 0x5b8, Applicationstarttime 01c9144734530afc.

Does anyone know what can be done to diagnose and clean up my system?

    Thanks,
    Philipp

    Grazie Max

When i try to install the windows update Kb947821 an error of checkSur.exe does not let me install the file with error code FF, what can i do ?

    Thanks Max

  • @afritzse
Thanks for the logs. Could you re-run CheckSUR and take a screen shot of the UI where you see this error and upload it? Can you also upload the logs in the %windir%\logs\CBS\CheckSUR*.log directory as well?

    @grafiti & Maximiliano70
Can you guys upload the files I asked afritzse for a few posts ago? This would be a big help.

    Thanks,

    Michael Giusty

  • Hey guys I had the same issue. Im a newbie but I was determined to get this fixed due to the fact that I'm a music producer and have alot of my work on my HD. I refused to call Dell or to reformat.

anyway, here's what I did to fix the problem

    1. Turn off your computer and make sure put in Vista Reinstallation DVD.

    2. Go into BIOS and set your boot sequence so that you boot into CD/DVD first instead of Hard drive.

    3. Once your in the utilities screen, select the "scans disks for errors" option.

    4. After you scan the disk (takes about 10 mins), it will reboot, then go into another scan.

    5. During the second scan, make sure you do not press any keys to abort this scan!. This scan will detect a bunch of bad clusters and eliminate them.

    6. After this scan, the system will hang a bit, but you should be able to get back into Vista...

    hope this helps...

side note: my windows has been acting quirky ever since I got back in....

  • Hi Michael ,
It seems I have a similiar problem with CheckSUR.exe like "afritzse" has (at least I can see the same logs).
Just in my case the CheckSUR.exe hungs up and Windows Update stops it with Error C00701E7.

Have you some advancement with this problem?

    Thanks,

    Genadi

  • Hey Michael,

what do you think about Diegoesk suggestion ?

What it has to do with SP1 and KB947821 windows update ?

    Tuesday, September 16, 2008 6:03 PM
  • sorry guys. I forgot to mention that I was not able to boot into VIsta after this SP1 update. Be mindful that I downloaded the kb955302, kb951978, kb955302, kb940157, and the kb952709 update, along side the SP1update.

also, I even tried going into safe mode, debugging mode (and all the other modes on the F8 screen); nothing worked.

Also, whenever I would try to log in via Safe mode, it would always stop at the
    CheckSUR.exe  file.

When Installed the utilities disk and scanned the disk for errors, it worked and I was able to login to the OS. PLEASE USE MY SOLUTION ABOVE. IT WORKS!!

  • If you’re encountering a crashing problem or are seeing “Failed with FF” from Windows Update with CheckSUR, we’d really appreciate your help figuring out what is going wrong.  Please send an email to checksff@microsoft.com and we’ll provide instructions.  We think we know what the problem is but would like to work directly with a couple of individuals to confirm.

  • Hey Michael,

i have been called from win Update department at Amsterdam and after 2 days after sending them files they ask me they gently told me that the file KB947821 is already included in SP1, wich i had in download update, and that is why i had CheckSur error.

They say It is also relevant that this file is not been requiered anymore from the system in update so for them is everything normal and i am fine,

     this is it,

     unless you have another result,

    Thanks Max

  • Hey everyone,

We have a new version of CheckSur available. The 64 bit Vista package isn’t available yet, but all the other packages are the updated version. If you have 64 bit vista you can use the Server 2008 x64 package.

New versions of CheckSur can be found here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

  • Hey Michael,

    I need yr opinion please,

from win Update department in Amsterdam they say that the file KB947821 is already included in SP1, wich i had in update, and that is why i had CheckSur error.

They say It is also relevant that this file is not been requiered anymore from the system in update so for them is everything normal and i am fine,

but now you release a new version of kb947821,

is this included in SP1 or really we need to download it from yr new release you sent ?

    Thanks Max

Can you let me know if you've tried the updated version? I'd like to who has tried it and whether or not it's fixed your issue.

    Mr Michael Giusty,

I really appreciate you help, the new version fixed my problem. Meanwhile I still need to know why I don't have the "Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.784" installed automatically & never seen any "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821)" on windows update?

    Any recommendation please?

    Best regards,

  • Hey wondering if you have had this problem fixed. Here are a few big things that might answer or solve all your problems and this is very much so for a lot of microsoft software malfunction.(Except in well run RAID systems.) What happens is that any hardrive whether it be Connected via Sata, Firewire, Usb etc that is ever connected to your system during a major update or any kind of installation that requires windows to power it all that information is spread out randomly across all disks in your entire system possibly also including attached network drives.(Hence the better debugging etc for users that use networking eg. businesses therefore purchase Professional or Ultimate Editions) I myself am unsure of what the purpose of this file is but I have noticed it placed one of my external drives along with other windows Files. Eeeek Now I worry what to do myself when I go to format this external as it is a Mid Term Storage Drive and I would like to format. Well hope my insight can maybe help and well A reply from someone that knows how I can remove those files from my portable so I can format please let me know
