Why no 16-bit Windows apps in 64-bit Windows? RRS feed

  • Question

  • 32-bit versions of Windows run 16-bit Windows apps in an emulator called WoW32. 64-bit versions of Windows run 32-bit Windows apps in an emulator called WoW64.

So why can't 64-bit versions of Windows run 16-bit Windows apps? For example, why can't WoW64 run WoW32 to run 16-bit Windows apps?

Yes, I know you can run 16-bit apps with Virtual XP on 64-bit Windows. But why is that necessary? It's a clunky way to run 16-bit Windows applications compared to WoWxx.

  • This is a 64Bit CPU limitation . In the 64Bit Long Mode you can't run 16Bit apps.
