    If you upgrade to Vista from a previous Windows, these previous files and folders will be moved to a folder named Windows.old and you will be able to access the old information in Windows.old. To put it simply, the folder contains the backup data of the previous OS, which will help you to protect yourself from losing important data. Should any loss or damage occur in the process of Windows installation, you can simply refer to that back-up file. If you have already backup previous data manually, take it easy to remove the Windows.old folder from the computer.
