I need to connect to a Linux machine that does not have SaMBa. I'm told I can run an SSH server on my host PC, which runs Windows 7 Home Premium.
Can anyone suggest an SSH server, preferably with a small footprint, that I can leave running.

You might look at copSSH. Its actively maintained and based on OpenSSH/OpenSSL/cygwin.
My recommendations for securing a SSH server...
You can't add a SAMBA function to the LINUX box?
