One of our colleagues has used a Volume License DVD to install Windows 7 Ultimate on a system because the OEM DVD has not been delivered with the system; he then also installed some software on that PC. Now he has received the OEM DVD (Windows 7 Professional).
The system refuses to activate using the OEM key. Will it be possible to force the system activation using the OEM key? If not, he has to reinstall everything.
1) For Windows 7 Ultimate, Volume License media does not exist, so this was installed with a different type of media. For Windows 7 Volume License is only available for Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise.
2) Windows 7 Ultimate is installed so a Windows 7 Ultimate key is needed to activate it. The Windows 7 Professional key cannot be installed as there is a different edition installed, a Windows 7 Ultimate key is needed to change out the key.
To use Windows 7 Professional key, you will need to reinstall Windows
