CD/DVD drive not working

    Question

  • CD/DVD drive not working!
My TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632N ATA Device that worked fine in Vista Ultimate 64-bit does not work in Windows 7 64-bit.

It provides it as an option to boot from it (when I left the Win7 DVD in it).
It runs to read a disk when I insert the disk, & Device Manager is aware of it.

    BUT - it won't work.
It does NOT appear as a drive in the "Computer" list in explorer.
It does not read/play my games.
In the device properties it says the following:

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

    Any help would be appreciated!

But i presume you use the GEARAspi driver who seems to be install by Itunes... To investigate..

    Procedure must be made manually:

Remove any file who began with GEARAspi. You can found them in system32, system32/drivers and sysWow64.

After this, delete any key in registry who began with GEARAspi and the folders names GEARAspi...

I uninstall the device and scan for hardware change and the device reinstall correctly.

My drive is back. Hope it will be the same for you.

  • You could try going to the device manager and uninstalling the cd drive and then scan for hardware changes and see if that re installs the drivers from windows 7.

  • That didn't work. It just tries to reinstall the same driver & says:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

  • Sorry - I combined two (failed) actions in that response there.

I uninstalled & tried to let Win 7 install & it pops up a box that says the device name & "Failed".

I tried to manually choose the driver and then I got the message:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

  • Random thought is the firmware on the drive the most recent?

  • Dear Alex,

This same thing also happened with my drive, a TSST H653.  There is no driver update available from the manufacturer.  My drive was installed in a HP computer I bought last month.  Worked fine on Vista 64bit.  The driver Win7 tries to use is a generic MS CD driver dated 6/21/2006 !!

I have notified both Samsung and MS about this.

Any fixes/workarounds greatly ap[preciated.  Or maybe a copy of the Vista 64 driver to try !!

    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Random thought, but here goes...

Have you installed any copy protected games?  Something like Safe-Disc or similar which install their own drivers  (bear in mind that games demos downloaded can also include this protection - so it doesn't necessarily mean it was installed from a CD/DVD)?

I'm just thinking given the problems with the drivers for ISO reading programs that a similar problem may occur with these copy protection methods on Windows 7.

I've not experienced it myself, but maybe some food for thought...

  • Same problem for me.

Device status: "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"

In driver details, there is two driver file. One from Microsoft (cdrom.sys) who is digitally sign with a certificate (no error and a icon of a certificate)  and the other (GEARaspiWDM.sys) who is not recognize as digitally signed.

I tried many things like, remove the file and let Windows install the device without success. I tried too to  authenticate manually the certificate from GEAR manually and it did'nt work either.

It seems that Windows7 don't want to recognize the certificate who come with the driver... I found that in the certificate, there is no email associated. Maybe there a link with the problem...

To see the certificate of the file, right click on the file and check the properties.

  • Same problem for me on my Dell precision 6300M laptop, which had Vista x64 sp1 working fine. I attempted a firmware upgrade but the firmware program can't find the optical drive because there is no current firmware version recognized. I even tried in safe mode. Not being able to use the cd/dvd drive is very annoying, but thats what I get for installing a beta op system.

I was thinking of uninstalling the optical drive driver, turning off the machine, removing the optical drive from the machine, turning on the machine, shutting down the machine, installing the optical drive, then turning on the machine, but I think I'll wait a few days.

I chose the upgrade option for installing Windows 7. I love the new task bar!

  • I chose the upgrade too. Little question, do you have this file in system32/drivers/GEARAspiWDM.sys? And other question, do you have Itunes on your computer? It seem that this ASPI is link with this software. I uninstall it but my drive don't work even after this...

    Keep serching..

  • Thanx for the update, R.L. I actually had the same problem when I went through an Upgrade from Vista. I couldn't find any solution, and with a bit of free time on Saturday, I just did a clean install to resolve.

Your solution makes sense, as I had iTunes installed.

  • RL - first of all, you ROCK!

So yeah, that fixed it. I renamed all the Gearaspi* files to end in .bak in case I needed them again, backed up the registry & deleted all keys/folders with Gearaspi* and then uninstall & scan for hardware changes & the drive came right back up.

I always knew iTunes was evil, now I have proof :)

  • Dear Dragnfyre,

Yes that kb article worked for me!

Just 1 (or maybe 2) registry entries to delete.

After doing so, a reboot found my drive.

As noted, the culprit was iTunes.

When I started iTunes, it told me to reinstall it due to the registry change I made.

But I only use iTunes to sync my iPhone, and that works fine without a reinstall.

So I'm good to go.  Thanks!

  • Thank you very much!  I tried the remedy in the sections above this, removing GEARA... references and it didn't work for me.

This knowledge base article worked (even though it is written for Vista).  I have my drive back!

  • Will this disable iTunes?  What happens if I have to reinstall iTunes?  Will I be in the same situation again?
    Wednesday, January 21, 2009 11:56 PM
  • this is an idea. first uninstall Itunes, reboot sys and try again. this time you should receive error code 39. If you do, reinstall Itunes and cd will come back online. I have been playing with for about a week and this solved my problem

  • Worked for me as well. My Plextor PX-800A was throwing that error 52 message. Uninstalled and then re-installed iTunes and now both work fine.

  • I have a similar but different problem. I have two Samsung DVD writers (one ATA internal, the other USB external). The both show up as CDROM devices in Windows 7 with NO burn support. I assume this is a limitation with the in-system ROXIO driver? I will try firmware upgrades to both units and then perhaps install NERO to see if their driver will bring up the drives properly.
    Saturday, May 09, 2009 12:00 AM
  • I had a simular problem when I was using NERO 7. All I'd get was a bunch of system errors when I tried running the program. The solution that finally worked for me was to uninstall my full copy of NERO 7 and install the OEM copy of NERO 8 that came with my drive.

  • I have an Acer Timeline and did the windows 7 upgrade.  Phase 3 didn't work because it didn't recognize that a CD was in the drive.  After a few days of help from a friend, this is what you do.

Don't do phase 3.  Do windows updates directly from microsoft.
Download Power Smart Manager driver from Acer website for windows 7.
Go under power options/advanced power setting/hard disk and change setting to turn off hard disk after 1-2 hours.

Dvd drive will always work when plugged in.  Within the setting you make (1-2 hours) the dvd drive will pop out on battery if you hit eject button.

Hope this helps, I'll check back and see if anyone has problems.

  • Hello,

Just read your post and are having the same problem.  I found that Windows media player is the issue, as I don't use Itunes at all.  I found that I can burn audio music through the windows media player.  I also updated the firmware again and also did a bios flash for the motherboard which worked for a while and then had the same issue.  Sometimes works and other times it won't read blank media.  I then thought I would try an external dvd burner and found that in most cases it would work everytime, but it was slow at 4xSpeed via USB and the other problem is that if the screen saver runs it cancels the burn.  You have to sit and keep moving the mouse but It will burn with an external.

Bios flash has to be done very carefully as it can kill your motherboard if not done correctly.  I found that in most cases the new bios needed to be updated first  and then  the firmware for the dvd burner done next. ( Bios is on the motherboard of the Laptop for those who don't know. )  Bios will also improve some aspects of your system also.

Anyway, try to run media player and burn an audio cd.  See how you go and reply back on this forum.  I also want peolple to help each  and hope we can solve this problem as the Burner works under VISTA but having issues with Windows 7.0.  I believe windows media player is the key!

    Thanks,

    Igor!

  • Hi,

My LG DVD ROM is not working properly. It reads some media disks. But It is not reading the Bootable CDs and Motherboard CDs . It is even reading the very scratched media CDs as well. It started to happen after I installed the Windows 7. Earliar It was working fine with Windows XP and Vista.

I have tried the Options Given -

    1. I have re-installed the Firmware from LG website.

    2. I have tried the idea given on the

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461/en-us
as suggested by draganfyre. But I could not locate the Upperfilter and Lowerfilter by using "devcon".

CD/DVD ROM Drive is not accessing the bootable CD at booting time. I am not able to understand the problem. Please help me as I am stuck with this.
