27/02/2019: BSOD (system froze during dump file creation/don't have a log of the error code)

I have no idea what is causing it, it just started out of the blue. Perhaps a Cumulative Update for Windows 10 has introduced the random instability? Initially I suspected a recent update to the audio driver was the cause of the issue, but downgrading the driver doesn't resolve the issue, so I tried upgrading the video drivers and that didn't resolve the issue and finally I tried turning off MSI mode for the iCH10R SATA Controller device and that also didn't resolve the issue.

I'm at a loss for what is causing this onslaught of different BSOD's/general system freezing/deadlocking. Stability varies with each power cycle of the system, sometimes it crashes early on, sometimes later on, sometimes seemingly the system is rock solid stable.

Any help in diagnosing the BSOD's would be appreciated.

  • It looks like it was an issue with one of the cumulative updates for Windows 10, most likely the one that introduced RETPOLINE functionality. The subsequent Windows Insider (preview ring) update re-stabilized my system.
