KB2481109 fails to install

    Question

  • Just released Security Update for Windows XP (KB2481109) fails to install on either of my XP SP3 x86 PCs. Microsoft Download Center manual install also fails. "Install updates and restart" reboot fails. All the system log says is:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8007f0f4: Security Update for Windows XP (KB2481109).

  • It fails on my nine XP machines as well, some with XP Home, some with XP Pro and one with XP MCE. but for different reason. "Setup cannot continue because one or more prerequisites required to install KB2481109 failed."

This update failure has become a regular occurence with Microsoft. From the horrors of the .NET framework line, to the Outlook junkmail filter just released and even these common but critical security patches, I'm lucky to get ANY productivity time in at all. I'm seriously considering moving my whole operation to Linux...

  • I believe it's telling you that you have an old or mangled version of RDP client installed:

1.469: FileVersion of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstscax.dll is Less Than 6.0.6001.0
1.469: Fist Condition in Test.RDCInstallBlock.Section Failed
1.469: Condition Check for Line 2 of PreRequisite returned FALSE

mstscax = microsoft terminal services client axtive x

You might try installing or reinstalling RDP client 6.1

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=6e1ec93d-bdbd-4983-92f7-479e088570ad

Of course, if this fixes your particular problem , you will probably start having mine.

  • Sorry Billbo72, I thought 6.1 was latest, but 7.0 is here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969084

However, I see a lot of people are downloading 6.1 and even 6.0. I think they may be running into problems with 7.0, uninstalling it, and going back to 6

  • I am having the same problem on my two XP partitions and six customer machines. I tried the various hints in this thread without resolution. I am glad this does not seem to happen very often.

  • Would those having problems with getting KB2481109 installed mind checking the file version of the "mstscax.dll" in the Windows\System32 folder?
Could you also please check the file version of the "msi.dll" also located in Windows\System32 too?

    Please post your results here.

  • I wonder whether this is really right or a bug (update_SP3QFE.inf ):

    [OverrideVersionNumbers]
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22319
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22307
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22493
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22499
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22528
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6000.16386, 6.0.6001.22443
        mstsc.exe,       6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22470

It would explain, why the setup thinks, the FileVersion of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstscax.dll is Less Than 6.0.6001.0.

Or ist there a reason for blocking file version 6.0.6001.22443?

  • @dk2000

You'll find (almost) the same in the update_SP3GDR.inf and that succeeded here without problems. The list in the GDR inf is even longer:
    [OverrideVersionNumbers]
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22319
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22307
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22493
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22499
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22528
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22838
        mstscax.dll,     6.0.6000.16386, 6.0.6001.22443
        mstsc.exe,       6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22470
        mstsc.exe,       6.0.6001.18000, 6.0.6001.22838

I would like to bet, that those having problems with KB2481109 are having a QFE file version of the mstscax.dll on their systems.

  • It's strange. It seems to fail on this version installed on Windows XP SP3:

    mstscax.dll  6.0.6001.22443 (vistasp1_ldr.090604-0003)

What branch is it? And which Update installed it?

    It's the QFE branch of KB956744 (MS09-044).

  • Updated MUI for XP SP3 and installed RDP Client 7.0, ran update again and received new update, forgot to write down number, installed that update and issue resolved.

    Went back to update history,

Security Update for Windows XP (KB2483614)

Seems to have fixed the fail to install on KB2481109.

Thanks for the information on this thread.

  • That 7.0 didn't work for my XP SP3 either. I did have the mstscax.dll version .22443 which 7.0 didn't change but it did change the mstsc.exe though. I ended up deleting that dll through windows explorer and then running the WindowsXP-KB2481109-x86-ENU.exe. SUCCESS!

It is now using dll version 6.0.6001.22840 and my mstsc.exe is version 6.1.7600.16385. I think the hotfix also updated that exe but not sure.

Hope it helps ya'll.  Nothing like brute force to satisfy! ;)

Hm, KB956744 isn't listed in "Software" with the "Show Updates" option turned on? That's strange, since the version of the mstscax.dll is from the QFE branch of that update.
Did you've "cleaned up" the update list and/or the $NTUninstall... folders manually or with a "tool" by any chance?

KB956744 can be found at Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs with Show updates checked.

When I uninstalled KB956744, I got a warning that huge list of programs possibly would't work. I ignored the warning and after uninstalling ran

Microsoft Update. KB2481109 installed just fine. Thanks

It's possible I did something manually. What I now did was install then remove the RDP 7.0 client KB969084, then I installed KB956744. Then I was finally able to install KB2481109 successfully.

  • I've just got a reply from the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) guys I've asked to look into the issue. They are confirming what I've suspected:

"We're gather the needed info to update the KB article, but as a workaround, you can either uninstall MS09-044 (KB956744) and then install MS11-017 or install hotfix KB967885 on top of MS09-044 to get MS11-017 to install properly.  This does seem to only affect XP SP3 systems on the QFE branch ."

"QFE branch" in this case means: Version 6.0.6001.22443 of mstscax.dll beeing present in the System32 folder of your Windows XP machine.

  • You've activated the "Show Updates" option on the top left after opening "Software" in the Control Panel?

If you did and still can't find KB956744 beeing listed there, you may want to install hotfix KB967885 (follow the "View and request hotfix downloads " link there on the top left and accept the "contract") first. After you've installed KB967885 the installation of KB22481109 (MS11-017) should be successful too.

2011-03 update KB2481109 is only for RDC6 version.
2011-03 update KB2483614 is only for RDC7 version.

FIX KB2481109 FAILS TO INSTALL PROBLEM (Windows XP SP3):

    1. "Control Panel" -> "Add or Remove Programs" -> check the "Show Updates" box.
    2. Uninstall update KB956744 (RDC6 fix 2009-8)
    3. Reboot the computer.
    4. Go to the Windows Update site and instal the KB2481109 update (for RDC6 version).

    OR

    1. Install hotfix KB969084 (RDC7 update 2009-10) NOTE! If necessary, change the language and click "Change".
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=72158b4e-b527-45e4-af24-d02938a95683
    2. Reboot the computer.
    3. Go to the Windows Update site and instal the KB2483614 update (for RDC7 version).
NOTE! There is no KB2481109 update (for RDC6 version) because you have RDC7 version installed.

  • I didn't have KB956744 installed either but had same setup(32 bit, XP home and same mstscax.dl version) as Erik so followed what he did.

i.e. "install then remove the RDP 7.0 client KB969084, then I installed KB956744."

But when I manually(and succesfully) installed KB956744(MS09-044) from the link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=d1f82d76-eeb2-4ff4-9d2c-46882f214719&displaylang=en

my mstscax version didn't change !?

    Still can't install KB2481109 either !

    Please help !

    Thanks.

    Sunday, March 13, 2011 2:21 AM
  • Since last post tried re-installing RDP 7.0 client KB969084(WITH KB956744 already installed it wasn't before !) and checked mstscax.dll version(properties, version tab) and saw it was updated to version 6.1.7600.16385

Then Windows updates automatically prompted me to install KB2483614.

So my order of "install/building" was basically KB956744, KB969084, KB2483614.

So now think I've managed to find a solution similar to NFrankel now

    i.e

"Security Update for Windows XP (KB2483614)

Seems to have fixed the fail to install on KB2481109."

Not sure what "MUI for XP SP3" is but I also ran "Microsoft Fixit" at some point (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144) to help "You cannot install updates" but no idea if this had any effect.

  • Been having the same problem for over two weeks with installing KB2481109 as most everyone else.  Using XP Home.  However, after going through these inputs several times, Ton801 on 10 March gave me the clue that worked.  I removed mstscax.dll from my System 32 directory (actually renamed it and moved it) and then ran KB2481109 again and it installed.  Found the mstscax.dll had gone from Version 6.0.6001.22443 to 6.0.6001.22840.  All is well once more.  Thanks to everyone for the input

  • Thanks Freudi,

    KB967885 worked for me too.

KB22481109 loaded just fine after rebooting from installing KB967885.

    Again, Thank You Very Much.

PS:  What does QFE stand for?

  • This absolutely worked after a couple weeks of frustration and trepidation at uninstalling KB956744 because of all the potential programs that "might now work properly" as a result...Figured, to hell with it, uninstalled KB956744 and ran the updates again and KB2481109 installed perfectly.

    Thank god for smart people...

  • I'm having this problem with KB2481109 security update.  I checked the file version for the two you requested.

    "mstscax.dll"  (Version 6.0.6001.22443)

    "msi.dll"  (Version 4.5.6001.22299)

    Saturday, March 19, 2011 2:59 PM
  • I found that if you express update to get the update (KB2481109) ready to install then go to your control panel, then add or remove programs and go remove the update (KB956744) you will install the new update without any problems. This is the only way that I found works to install the new update.

  • Thanks for all the good work.

    I deleted KB956744 and KB2481109 installed without a prob.

    Thanks again

  • Vagabond6 - Thank You

You solution was very easy -  just renamed mstacax.dll   and went to restart -  KB2481109  loaded no problem.   Checked version of mtacax after -  22840

B/T/W I had uninstalled KB956744 as suggested in other solutions but it did not allow the update to install.  That's when I decided to try your rename suhhestion.

    Thanks again -   Bill

  • Okay. This worked for me on ALL eleven XP machines in my shop:

    Download and install KB967885.

    Link

    Download and install KB2481109.

    Link

    Finally joy...

Secunia PSI will let me rest now with my 100% system score...

    It won't work with WindowsXP-KB967885-x86-RUS.exe and WindowsXP-KB2481109-x86-ENU.exe

You got to download same language, here is the link to the right file for KB967885.

  • Hi everyone,

Don´t need to uninstall something, only read your log and update then done...

I had the same problem and did like it:

    I updated with KB969084 then with KB2483614

Follow the next step to understand better what you have to do

    • first of all delete the log file "KB2481109.log" from Windows directory
    • then download the update KB2481109 there http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/fr-fr/details.aspx?FamilyID=d67e4d8c-aeb9-45e6-9555-7456c5540475
    • Start the update
    if failed :
    • check the log file if you have a message like it:

FileVersion of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstscax.dll is Less Than 6.0.6001.0
    Fist Condition in Test.RDCInstallBlock.Section Failed

    • then update with KB969084 there http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/fr-fr/details.aspx?FamilyID=72158b4e-b527-45e4-af24-d02938a95683

at this point if you try again to update with KB2481109, it´d fail and inside your log get :

Condition succeeded for section Presence.RDCInstallBlock.Section in Line 1 of PreRequisite
FileVersion of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstscax.dll is Greater or Equal To 6.0.6001.0
FileVersion of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstscax.dll is Greater Than 6.0.6002.0
    Second Condition in Test.RDCInstallBlock.Section Failed

    •  you need now to update with KB969084

    --------------------

    for information:

you have to apply the correct update for your version of Remote Desktop Client that is installed on your OS.
    versions 5.2 = KB2483618
    versions 6.0 + 6.1 = KB2481109
    version 7.0 = KB2483614

    --------------------

    Now everything should be ok

    • <Happy dance>

    Hope it was useful

NB : Download and install only an update with your XP language to avoid any problem

    Friday, April 08, 2011 8:06 AM
  • That 7.0 didn't work for my XP SP3 either. I did have the mstscax.dll version .22443 which 7.0 didn't change but it did change the mstsc.exe though. I ended up deleting that dll through windows explorer and then running the WindowsXP-KB2481109-x86-ENU.exe. SUCCESS!

It is now using dll version 6.0.6001.22840 and my mstsc.exe is version 6.1.7600.16385. I think the hotfix also updated that exe but not sure.

Hope it helps ya'll.  Nothing like brute force to satisfy! ;)

    L8R

FWIW: I followed this example but simply renamed mstscax.dll (just in case) and then clicked on the update shield in the task bar. It ran fine and upon restart the issue was resolved and I'm now running mstscax.dll version 6.0.6001.22840

    Thank you!

  • So If I have a version 7.0 RDC (6.1.7600.20861 to be exact) and update KB2483614 then I don't need update KB2481109 or am I wrong? I downloaded KB967885 but I still can't download KB2481109 but now I don't know if this is a problem or not.

You're correct. KB2481109 is for RDC 6.x only.

    @Vegan

I suggest is updates are not working, it might be an idea to install XP fresh as its hard to poke around witch each specific case that does not qualify for a one size fits all approach.

You're suggesting to reintall Windows XP from scretch due to a "sub-optimal" compiled update by MS (KB2481109) which doesn't reflect all conditions out there in its update.inf? Really? Can't believe that.

  • Actually, there was a simple solution. You just need to update your current Remote Desktop Connection 6.0/6.1 Client into version 7.0. You can download it from the following websites:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=72158b4e-b527-45e4-af24-d02938a95683&displaylang=en

Then install the latest security updates for the Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 Client from Microsoft Update from http://update.microsoft.com.

This guidance is only applies to Windows XP Service Pack 3 when running with Professional and Home Edition.

This is the most simple steps to fix your problem of failure installation of security updates for Remote Desktop Connection Client.

You must first update RDC to 7.0 with KB969084. Run Windows update again and update KB2481109 will be successful.

  • I suggest a better answer here: see dorbeetle on March 12

because if proceed to update RDC to version 7, the kb2481109 is no longer needed.

    A: hotfix kb967885 then kb2481109   OR,

B: update kb969804, then kb2483614 - now in  microsoft update list.

  • Worked for me : Download and install KB 967885 from http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?autocom=downloads&showfile=11132 (english version hotfix for (x86) XP SP3)then KB2481109 wont fail anymore.
