  • Hi tut69,

The issue should be caused by damaged or incorrect registry key entry. Please check the following registry value:

    1. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New\

    3. Please check if the value for (Default) is: {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}

If the issue persists after changing the registry key value, please continue to try the following suggestions:

    1. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder

    3. Right click on the Folder key on the left pane, and then select "Export" to backup this registry key.

    4. Go to my Skydrive and download folderfix.zip file.

    5. Save the folderfix.zip file on to your Desktop.

    6. Right click and extract the folderfix.reg file.

    7. Right click on the folderfix.reg file and then click Merge.

    8. Click Yes to confirm the modification.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Linda

  • Hi Linda,
In another forum, a user is having trouble with the New > Shortcut option.  The option is there, but clicking it doesn't open the "New Shortcut Wizard".  It sounds similar to this, if you have any ideas.  Here's the link.

If this was helpful, please vote. If it solves the issue, please click Propose as Answer. Thanks!

  • Hi Linda,

Thanks, your posting kept me from having to reinstall or install another copy of Windows 7 X64 to figure out what the differences were.  I did want to note for folks searching here and were screwed over by Unlocker 1.8.8 the registry file you posted above works great.

  • Thanks for the fix, that worked perfectly!

I checked the registry values and found the program that caused my problems: Boot Deleter (which I used to remove a locked file before booting). Just so you know; don't use this program :)

Maybe I'll mail them so they know of this problem (application is from 2005, can't blame them :P)

Same here. After I removed BootDeleter from my computer (didn't need it anymore anyway) and applied reg file provided by Linda Yan (thank you very much!!!) everything has started working.

  • ANOTHER PROGRAM CAN CAUSE THIS!

Digital Defender antivirus (the free version) causes this problem on Windows 7 64-bit when you uninstall it using Microsoft's standard uninstaller!  Took me forever to track this down; fortunately I have lots of backups of my system on an external hard drive (don't depend on Windows System Restore, they only have room for a few restore points, so they don't go back very far).

If you have Digital Defender installed, I don't think it will harm you; just don't uninstall it!  If you must, you can use the fix above, or you can use a backup or System Restore to go back to a time before you installed it.  Or you can wait until the makers of Digital Defender announce that they have fixed all versions with this bug.  The announcement should appear at https://digitaldefender.zendesk.com/home.  I wrote to the Head Guru at Zendesk and if they know what's good for them, they will fix this and announce the fix, pronto!

Not being able to create a New Folder is the most glaring symptom, of course.  But when you take a bite out of the Windows operating system, mysterious stuff happens all over the place.  I suspect it of causing my MS Outlook Pro 64-bit 2010 (a part of MS Office 2010) to lose all its Help files and to respond to all email searches with "No match found".  Don't you just love it!

  • Thanks Linda-

However, it did not solve my problem with the new folder disappearing.

A win 7 64 bit system, I checked the registry, the value was correct.

I then downloaded from your skydrive (thank you again) folderfix.zip, unzipped it and followed your instructions.  The machine informed me it was not a registry file.  I then used regedit and imported folder_fix.reg from my desktop.  The green bar went all the way, then said it would restored on top of key: Folder.  Saying yes got me the same message.  The specified file folder_fix.reg  is not a registry file.

    What did I do wrong?

  • I CAME ACROSS THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE SAME ERROR CODE MESSAGE...

First off I am running Windows 7 64-bit edition. So for those who are having the same issue on this OS READ THIS!!!

Ok I almost feel stupid after about two hours of reading forums and comments and researching what may possibly be causing this error message. It is so simple that when you read this you are going to smack your self in the head like I did... Hear is the big secret!

Make sure you are logged into the administrator when merging the file to the .reg directory. And when I mean logged in as the administrator I do not mean right-click and run as administrator like everyone keeps saying to do. No, physically log in as the administrator on your computer and follow the steps from above that Linda has left for every one. That will solve this error code.

For some reason when you are logged in as a user and try to right-click and hit run as administrator it still recognizes that some keys are left open on the system. This is because the users profile registers off the administrators .reg when you try to access the regedit it now is opening both the users and administrators instead of closing the users and only opening and running as the administrator. Stupid I Know lol...

Long story short login as the administrator and then down load the folderfix.zip file extract it and right click merge, and you are all done. Also restart the computer and when you go to check to see if the new folder option is there it might take a minute or two generally on the second attempt to right click and create new folder it will be there hope this helps yall!!!

  • First of Linda your awsome! I been hunting forums for two days now, your the first to suggest digging through the registry :). Im wondering though what i should do if i dont even see the sub folder in question?

I have chased it all the way down to /contexmenuhandelers/ but theres no sub-folder named new. help please its driving me nuts.

    Thursday, May 2, 2013 1:40 AM
  • Thank you Thank you.  I figured it out thanks to your info. I traced the sub folders all the way to /contexmenuhandelrs/ but there was no /new/ there, so i down loaded folderfix from your sky drive. I didnt merge them at first I had just added folderfix to the registry witch helped a little. it allowed me to use the new context menu while inside my computer or pictures things like that but i was still unable to use it on the desk top. so i exported to desktop and merged seems to be working good no. thanks again. Oh is it safe to delete the back up copy of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder if not what should i do with it. just store it?

  • Linda--

I too had this problem just suddenly appear for no apparent reason.  No solution on the internet that I tried worked other than yours.  An interesting anomaly in case anyone else mentions it.  The first file I extracted from the zip file did NOT have MERGE as an option when right-clicking on it.  I tried everything I could think of and nothing helped.  Eventually I just extracted it again and the (2) version worked fine.  Any ideas why that would happen?  Not that it matters, thanks so much!  My "new folder" button was visible and even pushable, but it did nothing at all, no matter how many times I pushed it.  Not being able to make a new folder seems like it might be a small problem, but it's not.  I"m going to go back and look at the rest of the things on your skydrive and see what they might be for, if there's any explanation.

    Thanks.

I downloaded folderfix.zip, saved it to the desktop, extracted the file which brought me to the folderfix.reg file.

I right clicked on it but no "Merge" option appeared in the list.

I then decided to restore my system to an earlier date since this problem has cropped up in the last few days.  That didn't work:(

I found your solution my results were:

     - had the correct default value.

     - Merged the registry with the registry file from my Skydrive and I am now able to create folders.

    Thanks Linda, you're the best!!

  • Hi Linda,

I replied previously that your fix worked great. What I did not know is that the "New Folder" selection seems to repeatedly disappear from time to time. This time it seemed to be related to one of seventeen automatic fixes from Microsoft that occurred when I shut down last evening. Possibly you can have someone in MS take a look at why the problem reoccurs. Fortunately, each time the problem reappears, I am able to reapply your fix successfully (which BTW I have saved on my hard drive to avoid searching for your fix each time).

  • I understand this is an older post, but unfortunately both of your suggestions did not fix my problem. I have never came across this problem and it has me very intrigued. If by chance this post is still being viewed, I would like to know if you would possibly have any more insight on what the problem may be. Also the 'new folder' button on the menu bar does not work.

  • Awesome!  This fixed it for me.  I searched for 2 days and I was nervous about downloading and installing a fix.  I still have no idea what the culprit was.  The last change before "New Folder" disappeared was installing the latest iTunes, but not sure if that was coincidence.

    thanks,
