Change Distribution Settings Default For Software Update Group Downloads? RRS feed

  • Question

  • The default setting is "manually copy the content" and the check box for "distribute the content" in unchecked.

This doesn't make sense to me.  When setting up the packages, should we check the box and set them to "automatically download content when packages are assigned to distribution points?"

These Windows Updates packages will be used by workstations and servers on our local LAN.  Systems connecting externally via VPN are to download updates from Microsoft since the VPN boundary group is marked as a slow connection.

  • Are you referring to the Distribution Settings on the deployment package for "Specify the behavior you want to occur when a distribution point is enabled for prestaged content"?

If so, this refers to distribution points that are enabled for prestaged content. Ie, the content is prestaged and not transferred over the network.

  • This applies to applications/packages/operating systems as well, not just software update deployment packages. (you can see the Distribution Settings tab in applications/packages/operating systems).

These settings are for if your distribution point is enabled for prestaged content. Prestaged content is a setting on the DP, where you can manually copy the content over to the DP, instead of distributing it over the network. If the DP is enabled for prestaged content, then the automatically download content option can be useful for small packages instead of creating the prestaged content file.

  • I mean these settings.

How should they be configured normally?

  • Yes, you mean the part that says "Specify the behavior you want to occur when a distribution point is enabled for prestaged content"? with the 3 options? (automatically/download only/manually copy)

Yes.  Do we need to check the box and set it to download?

  • I went to the link and still didn't quite understand.

How can "automatically download content" and prestage together?  I though prestaging is manually copying files?

So, we just leave it at default radio button "manually  copy" setting and not check the box above?

  • The OP has the same question i have which was not answered at a.

How do you make it the DEFAULT. As in, i know i can go in and manuay switch the distribution to "automatic" but i dont want to have to. Other admins forget to do this, and the default is now set to manual. There must be a way to change it...

  • You cannot change the default; however, unless the DP is set to enable prestaged content (which is not default), this setting is irrelevant. Thus, if you want content to be automatic, don't set your DP to enable prestaged content.

  • ok from this ink: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/plan-design/hierarchy/manage-network-bandwidth

it appears that there is no point in prestaging content as i ony have one sccm server that does everything. I might be reading it wrong though, so if everything breaks, i wi put it back to the way it was. I dont see why this was ever turned on, but it coud have been the previous admin who worked here for some reason. i didnt set up sccm.

    thanks

  • Correct. The text on the option is somewhat misleading and most folks don't understand the immediate impact of enabling this option so we do on occasion see folks enabling it when they shouldn't.
