In-place OS Upgrade of Site Server and WSUS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Now that we have upgraded our production and test systems to 1602, we would like to take advantage of the ability to upgrade our site servers from Windows Server 2008 R2 to 2012 R2. The docs state that WSUS must be removed first or there will be dire consequences.

What I wanted to ask about is, is the process as simple as this?

    1. Remove WSUS 3.2 from Site Server, retaining the SUS DB
    2. Upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2
    3. Add the WSUS role to the newly upgraded site server

I see no other notes in the docs about how to approach this, so my assumption is this is all that is needed. Does anyone have real world experience in doing this?

A corollary question is one of our site servers in production has only the SUS console installed (SUP role is on separate server). I am guessing this process needs to be followed in that case to be safe. If anyone has experiences with this scenario, any input would be appreciated.
