W7 DRM reset ?

  • I am running RC1 Win 7 and recieve the following error in the Zune software. "The media rights on your computer has encountered an error and needs to be manually reset. error code: c00d11d6 (c00d278f)." I have tried everything on zune's web site but everything isn't compatible with windows 7 or not compatible with windows media player 12.

I have followed the posting ( ) but the solution posted does not help.   I rename the DRM folder (\\programdata\Microsoft\DRM) with no issues as I am an admin on the local box.  I go to the link to reset DRM but teh button is inactive.  I have tried everything I can think of, restarting my machine, launching IE as Administrator, different user, safe mode, etc. no luck.

In IE, I get the following error on the page:

    Webpage error details

    User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; InfoPath.2; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.0.0; Zune 3.0; MS-RTC LM 8)

    Message: The parameter is incorrect.

    Char: 13

    Any ideas ?

  • I'm having this EXACT problem with the RTM.  I spoke with the Zune support staff and after 45 minutes of trying different things, they came back and told me that Level 2 support refused to address this issue as the Zune software is not supported on Windows 7.  Now tell me how this works? I have a Zune pass that I am unable to use now?!?

  • After messing with this for a month I figured it out.

Close Media player and the Zune software if you have them open.

First delete your DRM folder. \ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM

Since I am running WIndows 7 X64 I opened the 32 bit Internet explorer as an administrator and went to

The DRM reset ran fine and after launching the Zune softare, just logon to Marketplace, So to Settings, Account, Purchase History, You should tehn be able to re-download any that you need to or play any that you have previously purchased.

  • I am having a similar problem, except I can download and run the resetDRM program just fine, but I never had a "DRM" folder in ProgramData to begin with. When I run the extracted CleanDRM file, CMD pops up for less than a second then disappears, and I am still unable use my Zune pass because of the same 'usage rights' error popping up every time. I've tried everything on OP's link as well as in this thread with no avail.

Is there a reason that I don't have a DRM folder? All hidden files are displayed...I really want to avoid cancelling my Zune pass because of Microsoft's incompetence, but there's no way I'm paying for absolutely nothing (which is exactly why I'll be cancelling my pass in a week if I don't get this fixed).

  • Tradecog, please make sure that Windows Explorer is set to show protected operating files too. You can also try resetting the DRM system manually, by following the instructions at .

  • None of the Step By Step fixes were working for me. I had to follow the additional steps between renaming the DRM folder and hitting upgrade components on the web page.

    1. download the Reset DRM tool
    2. The exe installer won't run on Win7 so manually extract the contents (I used 7 Zip)
    3. Set CleanDRM.exe to run in Vista SP2 compatability mode
    4. Run CleanDRM.exe

After I did those additonal steps, the upgrade button was no longer greyed out and reset ran.

Also I had a DRM folder with no contents. Yes I have show hidden files and folders enabled.
