Unable to connect to VPN. The client defaults to smart card instead of the certificate when trying to connect. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Unable to connect to VPN.  The client defaults to smart card instead of the certificate when trying to connect.  I get the following error message:

A certificate could not be found that can be used with this Extensible Authentication Protocol. (Error 798)

This only happens on certain computers.  Not all, even-though they are the exact same.

    Any help on this?

    Thank you,

  • Which VPN are you using? I use Private Internet Access and don't have any problems.

You might have to try reinstalling your VPN program. Your internet provider could also block VPN's, which are you using?

  • Hi,

    >>A certificate could not be found that can be used with this Extensible Authentication Protocol. (Error 798)

This problem occurs if the client certificate is missing.

    Please check your local certificate.

And if  your vpn is installed in Azure environment?

Hope this can help you, if you have anything unclear, please let me know.

    Have a nice day!

    Ellen
