App Notifications Greyed Out RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I recently noticed that I am getting no App Notifications (Toasts) in the top right of my main screen. On a closer look, I noticed that all the settings are greyed out and a notice stating: Some settings are managed by your administrator. I've never seen this issue before.

    Notification Settings

This is just a home PC running Windows 8.1 Pro. Not connected to any domain.

Also, on the main start screen, the first app has a weird grey border around it:

    Hmmm!

Any help with fixing this would be great.

    Thanks.

    M Knight.

  • OK, I have fixed all issues. Took me a while but they are fixed.

After the terrible Windows 8.1 Update 2 sort of really messed things up, I was left with no choice than to do a complete format. On re-installation from my Windows 8.1 DVD and most of the basic applications, I noticed that I was getting the same issues, though Microsoft have pulled Update 2 KB2982791.

At first I thought it may be because my settings were saved on my OneDrive account and that the downloaded settings may have included something from my previous problems or that the actual backup could be corrupted. So I deleted the backups and reset my system.

Still no change. I was so frustrated and I thought forget this so I decided to start getting my applications set up how I like them. So, I came to Bitdefender Total Security 2015 to set a few things up and I noticed that they have this new option called Profiles. So I looked at them and their settings and low and behold, I had found what has been causing me so much trouble.

The profiles disable or turn off many of Windows automated features, supposedly to improve performance. So I disabled all the options and switched off the profiles. Everything is back to normal now and working great.

So, if you happen to use any Bitdefender 2015 products, disable this option. I contacted their support and told them of the issues as nothing in their documentation warns of what may happen from using the profiles.

    So, problem solved.

  • Please note that today I have tried various fixes and a System Restore. No luck. I'm not even getting Windows notifications for anything nor am I getting the Outlook Envelope when I receive new email, though I do hear a sound at least.

  • UPDATE: I have fixed the notifications. I disabled the notifications in the Group Policy editor and re-enabled them, and I am now getting notifications again.

    Toasty

I still get the grey border around the first tile though, so if anyone knows what this is about or how to fix that, I would be grateful.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

The grey border is simply to mean which one you would like to select. We could use the arrow key to choose apps,or tap to select other options.

If you do not want to see that border, click on the blank space of start screen, then it would disappear.

    Hope this may help

  • Thanks for the reply.

I just found it strange as it's only just started doing the border thing over the last week, it wasn't there before that. On this particular PC I have 3 27" ASUS Touchscreen Monitors that I use with a special pen/stylus for motion graphic design. My Surface and my other 2 PC's don't have the border, so something has changed.

I know it's a picky thing, but I use my Start Screen a lot and it's just annoying and I've never seen it on any other Windows 8/8.1 start screen either.

Clicking on a blank part if the screen does hide it, as I do that a lot, but the next time I open the start screen, it's back.

  • Hi,

That's werid to me also. The border won't appear unless I tab it on my side.

We might take a clean boot and see if this is caused by any 3rd-party applications, make sure the tab key is not pressed, please refer t othe following article to clean boot:

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

  • Thank you, Michael!!

You saved me some time troubleshooting it, that's for shure!!

Pretty much the same thing happened to me, and if i didn't stumbled to your solution I would be tempted to reinstall my OS again (since same thing happened to me two months ago, but I was using Kaspersky then...don't remember what was the cause of problem then...)

To cut it short, this time it was Bitdefender Total security 2015 profile "game" that caused notifications not to show and a message in PC settings page: Some settings are managed by your system administrator, as a surprise to me-administrator!

So, thank you for reminding me to check those settings-if you leave it on "standard" profile, notifications (and everything else) should work as before!

  • No problem.

Yeah, it took me a while to realise what was causing the issue. I did 1 reinstall and a reinstall from an image and each time I had the same issue. Really puzzled me.

I spent a lot of time troubleshooting apps, removing them from startup, disabling services, all except for Bitdefender. I noticed that the profiles were on, so I checked them out and that's when I saw all of the options selected to ON. So I disabled the profiles option and rebooted and wow, everything was working back to normal, but some live tiles were still not updating, which was also annoying.

I've read so many fixes like run Disk Cleanup, fix and reset the Store but nothing worked. I had another issue with the 64bit version of Chrome being slow and a memory hog. One fix was to reset TCP/IP and the windows Winsock, so I tried this and nothing.

But, I found this utility here http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9848640 and I ran it, rebooted and again wow, Chrome was fixed and also, all my live tiles were updating and working like they should. SO, I created a brand new image and I'm now set to restore my PC to full working glory if it breaks (though Windows Threshold will be out by then, and there are rumours of it being a free upgrade for Windows 8/8.1 users, so here's hoping.)

So, if you have an issue with live tiles, try that fixit and reboot.

Anyway, I'm glad my problems could help you fix your problems. I posted the fix in case others had the same issue and because it's a 3rd party problem, no amount of diagnosing Windows will have resolved it.

  • Thank you, changing the group policy fixed the issue, no system format required.

  • Thank you, Michael

Not receiving notifications frustrated the daylight out of me.

Windows 10, Bitdefender Total Security 2016. Disabling the profile option sorted all the issues out.
