"NameType" in NLA Information for a Network Profile RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am working on building  script for analyzing NLA information for computers in our network and I've run across a value that I need but I cannot seem to find any documentation that explains the value.  The "NameType" value is what I am referring to.  I have several computers with different values such as 6, 71, 243, 160, 23 and 0 when I check their registries.  Does Microsoft have any documentation to explain these values or has anyone figured out these values and what they mean?

    This is a regkey from my machine.  I have omitted the ProfileName and Description.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles\{68A1A4C7-512E-4BD5-9FC9-B02A4DE77EFE}]
    "ProfileName"=
    "Description"=
    "Managed"=dword:00000001
    "Category"=dword:00000002
    "DateCreated"=hex:df,07,01,00,04,00,1d,00,0c,00,10,00,22,00,c2,00
    "NameType"=dword:00000006
    "DateLastConnected"=hex:e0,07,09,00,04,00,0f,00,14,00,33,00,32,00,7a,00
    "CategoryType"=dword:00000000
    "IconType"=dword:00000000

  • Although these links do explain how NLA works and how to query it and other useful information.  They don't provide what the exact values translate to.  I need to know what kind of networks these values represent.

    Through some digging in my spreadsheet and comparing the names of the networks I have determined however that:

    6 - Wired Network
    23 - VPN
    71 - Wireless Network
    243 - Mobile Broadband

    I still do now know what 0 and 160 are however.  I also do not know if there are other values besides these so I cannot fully finish my script until I have this information.

  • It maps to ipifcons.h header file, specifically IF_TYPE_ constants.

    #define IF_TYPE_ETHERNET_CSMACD         6
    #define IF_TYPE_PPP                     23
    #define IF_TYPE_IEEE80211               71  // Radio spread spectrum
    #define IF_TYPE_WWANPP                  243 // WWAN devices based on GSM technology

    So it seems NameType means adapter interface type.
