    Hi,

For this issue, you can refer to the following articles:

An error message occurs when you run "Sysprep /generalize" in Windows Vista: "A fatal error occurred while trying to Sysprep the machine"

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929828/en-us

Error message when you run the Sysprep command on a Windows Vista-based computer: "A fatal error occurred"

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930193/en-us

Error message when you use the Sysprep tool on a Windows Vista-based computer: "A fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine"

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947212/en-us

    Hope it helps.

  • A bit of a side question.  Where did you get the Vista drivers for your Dimension 4600?  I've be looking around but no luck yet.

    Thanks

  •  Thanks for those links Tim, I am getting error:

    2009-03-24 11:21:50, Error      [0x0f0082] SYSPRP LaunchDll:Failure occurred while executing 'C:\Windows\System32\sppnp.dll,Sysprep_Generalize_Pnp', returned error code 1060
2009-03-24 11:21:50, Error      [0x0f0070] SYSPRP RunExternalDlls:An error occurred while running registry sysprep DLLs, halting sysprep execution. dwRet = 1060
2009-03-24 11:21:50, Error      [0x0f00a8] SYSPRP WinMain:Hit failure while processing sysprep generalize providers; hr = 0x80070424

I have tried re-applying the image with an answer file that skips the re-arm portion (as recommended in  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929828/en-us) however I still get the same error.

Is anyone familiar with this issue? It must be something else, but I can't find anything on the web that would point me to what it is.

    Thanks,

    Tom

  • I have gone through the same processes and done everything by the book and get the same errors.  I have the same build, except for the drivers, on three different machines, Optiplex 760, Dell E6400, and an HP 6710B.  The 760 errors on execution of Sysprep with command line sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:c:\windows\system32\sysprep\unattend.xml
The other machines work fine and go on to boot into sysprep and on into my autolgin with all drivers intact.  Below you will find my logs and my unattend.xml
