Failed Upgrades to Windows 10 Enterprise RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm seeking help regarding the upgrades we have attempted at my company. We are trying to take Windows 7 Professional to Windows 10 Enterprise. We are using a WDS VBA script (not created by me) to start the upgrade. Roughly 1 out of 5 has worked. The others have all attempted to revert back to Windows 7 and generally left the computers unusable. At some point, I found Microsoft's SetupDiag.exe and have started running it on any failed machine. I'm posting the results below.

The script has been started as local administrator on each machine. We use our domain credentials within the script to gain access to the WDS server. The error codes seem to all be related to something in the recent folder for each profile.

What should we try, what could the issue be?

  • The interesting thing to note is that we also tried a USB upgrade and it essentially did the same thing (failed). I've looked at some of the directories for some of the failed upgrades and it is as if those files are no longer there.

  • Hello

The error message you pasted recorded “ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS  183 (0xB7)  Cannot create a file when that file already exists”, seems that the file already exists, that is why it failed on creation.

Try to remove recent file located in C:\Users\rbraun\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows and check again

But due to security policies and privacy protection, the forum does not provide log analysis. For deep research on windows upgrade, I advise open a support ticket with Microsoft. There are best resources can help you.

  • I experimented.

I attempted upgrading a computer, it failed with the same type of errors.

I then deleted everything in \User\*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\ for any and all users on that machine (it was close to ten). I tried the script again, it worked correctly and now that computer is on Windows 10.

Why is it that these machines are failing based on the ".lnk" files in "Recent\s"?

  • Hello,

The error 183 means “Cannot create a file when that file already exists”, in other world, you have installed this file on your PC. So you need to delete this file.

You can refer to the following link:
