  • 1. In addition to Reporting.log it would be helpful to look into WindowsUpdate.log (you need not include full listing...)

    2. When I went through the log file, I stopped in the part that ends on April 20, and starts again on April 23. In closer observation, there are several aspects, that should be considered:

This computer is currently scheduled to install these updates on ‎Friday, ‎April ‎20, ‎2012 at 9:00 PM:  - Security Update for Windows 7 (KB2532531)

Simple search pointed to KB 2532531 article that recommends

    • If you are running Windows 7, we recommend that you install update 2552343 before you install this security update. Your system is automatically offered update 2552343 when you use Microsoft Update.
    • After you install this security update, you may be prompted to install this security update again when you scan the system by using Windows Update, Microsoft Update, Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server or Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA). This issue may occur if you installed this security update, but you have not installed update 2552343. To resolve this issue, approve the installation of update 2552343 in WSUS or install update 2552343            (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2552343)        from Windows Update, Microsoft Update or from the Microsoft Download center, or re-install the security update a second time.  You should not see any subsequent re-offer.

It need not be the cause of trouble, but this patch would silent possible reccurence

    3. The there is following record point to error that zou have not referenced:

    {F2670F29-7B14-4C40-9E3A-E7887BAD8A25}    2012-04-23 15:18:44:474+0800    1    148    101    {D67661EB-2423-451D-BF5D-13199E37DF28}    1   80072ee2    SelfUpdate    Failure    Software Synchronization    Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x80072ee2.

This error points to unreliable connection http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/en-us

Double check if the rate of connection is not too slow or even the conection is interrupted. (Chances are, that instead of full package there is a fragment of it.)

    4. Try to download missing hotfixes and install them manually. Interesting is that there is message saying, that no updates were detected:

    {2C380882-C78B-412B-B9E1-6EE15F5FAD6E}    2012-04-23 15:05:23:245+0800    1    147    101    {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}    0    0    AutomaticUpdates    Success    Software Synchronization    Windows Update Client successfully detected 0 updates.

    5. Unfortunately you have not specified the history of installation. It seems that this is new install. Whenever you install vanilla plain operating system, install chipset driver, video and audio drivers and NIC driver (in this order) before you install any update from Internet. (My guess on the short history is based on the fact, that the update was issued on June/July 2011.)

    6. Google: Here is the remedy for 80080005, but be very careful to implemet it without backup (Not tested, only reference)

    • Click Start > Run > type “Regedit” in the open box > click OK
    • In the Registry editor that opens, navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session  Manager\SubSystems. You can do this by, in the Registry Editor window, clicking Edit on the toolbar > Find and typing in the value above.
    • Right click on the “Windows” entry that appears and click “Modify”. The “Edit String” dialog box will appear
    • In the “Value Data” box, locate SharedSection, add 512 to SharedSection and then click OK.

  • Hi Milos Puchta

    Thank you for your help.

I tried to fix the issue follow your steps.

The KB2552343 have already install on client.

Tried to install KB836941, then  error, code still is 80072ee2.

    The  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session  Manager\SubSystems\Windows content

    is

    %SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,12288,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ServerDll=sxssrv,4 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16

    >>  SharedSection=1024,12288,512   <<

I have check it same as other PC which can update successfully.

The client point the WUSUS server, it show the client disconnect on server.

There are 10+ clients can not update and error code is 80080005.

Some client have no error code 80072ee2, just error code 80080005 only.

I have no idea why the service corrupt suddenly.

There is no change for the client, the user have no admin right.

  • I have tried to repair issue with SFC, but I got the error

"Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

And CD-rom, USB port and system restore were disabled in my environment, so I can not repair it with windows7 DVD.....

The google said the SFC not work becourse the windows modules installer was disabled.

So, I need to repair windows modules installer but the SFC is not work....

  • Hi,

    Error code 0x80080005 is CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE.

    Error code 0x80072EE2 is ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT.

Firstly, I suggest to try to run this HotFix: How do I reset Windows Update components? and see how it works.

However, if issue persists, it is recommended to post the thread in WSUS forum for help.

    Hope this helps.

  • HI Jeremy

I triey to repair it with KB971058, failed...

I am no idear about how to WMI service was corrupted.

It notice error code 1009 (The configuration registry database is corrupt.)

And there is disk encryption software on the disk, so I also can not repair windows withe DVD.

  • Hi,

Based on my research, please try the following:

    1. In the start menu type "cmd" (without quotes) and on the top search result, right click the program icon and choose Run as administrator.

    2. Type following:

net stop winmgmt (choose Y when needed)

    winmgmt /resetrepository

    net start winmgmt

    3. Test the issue again.

If issue persists, I’m afraid that you have to perform an In-place Upgrade or reinstall your Windows 7.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi,

Firstly, please let us know whether the issue occurred in only one client or many clients.

Meanwhile, please try to run System Update Readiness Tool and check CheckSUR.log.

Also, please refer to The CBS.log file contains entries that some files are not repaired even after you successfully run the SFC utility on a Windows Server 2008-based computer and check CBS.log.

    Hope this helps.

  • hi everybody.

we do have exactly the same issue here.

we have two Images deployed to Desktop and Notebook Computers with the Software Management Software "Columbus". We Deploy Windows 7 Professional SP1 x86 and x64 with several other Software and protect the Notebooks with SafeGuard disk encryption.

the problem was found when we checked wsus. there are abou 16 out of 130 Computers (15 notebooks 1 Desktop) do have contact to wsus, but do not Report their state. Windows Update does not work on these Clients, Fails with error code 80080005 (WARNING: Cbs StartSession, error = 0x80080005).

Services.msc Shows that the Windows modules installer is not startet, Startup type = Manual. if i try to start it manually i get error 1009: the database of the configurationregistry is damaged.

when i start sfc /scannow it Ends with: "the Windows softwareprotection could not start the repair Service" (translated from german operating System)

as the Notebooks are protected with safeguard, i can not boot from Windows 7 DVD to perform an offline sfc scan.

wwp.net, could you find a solution for this Problem? any help would be appreciated, as no other threads i've found have so much similarities like yours and no other solution worked for us so far.

    thanks for your replies

  • Just an FYI to whoever has this problem, our organization had opened a case with MS and our issue was determined to be caused by a bug in the drive encryption software mentioned by a previous poster. Newer versions of Sophos Safeguard do not have this bug. There was no fix from MS and we updated our O/S images and re-imaged the machines affected to solve the issue.

  • I know the last reply to the post was in Janurary, but our organistation is experiencing the same issues, after investigation none of our dekstops or unencrypyed laptops are affected, they all use a generic windows 7 image, only laptops using sopohs easyguard 5.61, we also suspected it was the curpirit, I know you said the latest version resolved this, but you didn't specift what version you had and what version you installed that resolved this?.

Hi, which version re you specifically using? I'm seeing the same error on devices using 5.6 and it's causing me some headache planning how to settle it for my client

    Hi,

We have been having the same issue with multiple systems for a while now, we also use safeguard 5.61. I got in touch with Sophos and with a bit of digging around I discovered that it only effects 32bit Windows 7 Users.

All our 64bit workstations are fine, but the 32bit workstations are corrupting left right and centre.

I have been given a patch that you can apply to 32bit machines that haven't already been corrupted, which apparently will prevent the corruption. Only thing you can do with the corrupt machines is reformat and reinstall Windows. (Preferably upgrade to 64bit)

Let me know if you guys need the patch and I will link it to my OneDrive.

    Thanks

    Ash

  • That patch would be a lifesaver.

Anyone know if the same problem is occurring on 6.0 clients?

    Friday, January 9, 2015 10:00 PM
  • No, the issue was visible with SGN 5.60.0 and 5.60.1 and 5.61 only.

The issue was reported with Windows 7 32Bit only.

The issue does not occurs if Windows 7 SP1 was used from beginning.

There was one another disk encryption vendor with the same issue.

The available patch will prevent the issue - but not fix already affected clients.
