2008 R2 -> 2012 In Place Upgrade

  Hi,

  From my side testing, I installed a whole new Windows Server 2008 R2, then insert the Windows Server 2012 ISO disk, select the upgrade installation, everything works fine for me.

  I'm not sure about your Windows Server 2008 R2 status. If there are some features or roles installed on the Windows Server 2008 R2, you need to read the following article to do the roles and features migration:

  Yes, you should be able to easily upgrade as James points out.  And you are correct about upgrading core to core.  However, one of the new features of 2012 Core is the ability to turn GUI on and off - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831786.aspx.

  And, if you use DFS on your 2008R2 servers, the upgrade will work, but the 2012 DFS management tool  won't be installed. And, it's a real PITA to install it.

  I have two 08R2 core servers I'm using as hyper-v hosts, I'd like to upgrade these to 2012. Is an in place upgrade supported and if so can someone point me to some documentation? From what I gathered I can only upgrade to the same version and configuration level (i.e. core -> core or gui -> gui), any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi SeanP79, make sure you made a backup copy of VMs before performing in-place upgrade (free VeeamZIP can help). Then you can make reinstall 2008 R2 Hyper-V and restore VMs if something goes wrong. OR you can backup VMs on 2008 R2 Hyper-V and restore them to 2012 Hyper-V.

  For any others that follow this thread, the solution to the DFS Management Tools being gone after upgrade, is to install the feature again.

  From this technet page  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731089(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_UI

  • To install only DFS Management and command-line tools, from Server Manager, use the Add Features Wizard to install the Remote Server Administration Tools feature, select Role Administration Tools and select the File Services Tools feature with the Distributed File System Tools option. The Distributed File System Tools option installs the DFS Management snap-in and command-line tools, but it does not install any DFS services on the server.

  This worked fine for me. MMC snap-in installed and opened fine.
