Can't update past 10525 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Whether I have updates set to fast or slow, Windows Update doesn't even seem to see newer builds (e.g. 10547).

I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but a few weeks back (running 10525) I had an issue where my CACLS got weird on my %USERPROFILE% path; it was apparently owned by my local account rather than my account, causing all sorts of things to fail in weird ways. I did an icacls /reset and fixed it.

sfc /scannow shows some errors but looking at them they all seem to be dual ownership (e.g. %WINDIR%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules\NetworkSwitchManager has both "Modify" and "Full Control" permissions for SYSTEM).

WU is updating Defender and other updates, if I go through the steps for a Windows Update reset (removing CatRoot2 etc) then it tells me there is a new build available, goes through the motions of downloading it and rebooting, and I'm still back at 10525.

    Any ideas/advice?

  • I managed to get 10565 installed, but I had to go into "Windows Update > Advanced Options > Choose how updates are delivered" and turned on "send parts of previously downloaded Windows" and select "PCs on my local network, and PCs on the internet". Rebooted and 10565 showed up immediately and installed without issue.

I guess that the Insider Preview stream counts as "PCs on the Internet" :(

Troubleshooter finds nothing and says there's nothing to repair.

The second link you provided doesn't have Windows 10 instructions; the instructions it provides for Windows 8 are missing several services I had to find by hand to eliminate locks on CatRoot2, and...

It didn't fix the problem. This is why in my original post I said " if I go through the steps for a Windows Update reset (removing CatRoot2 etc),  then it tells me there is a new build available, goes through the motions of downloading it and rebooting, and I'm still back at 10525."

  • I have exactly the same problem as you i think. It said 10562 was available to install so  i went to install it. Then nothing happened and i am still on 10525 and now it never shows anything to do with the update option again.

No matter what i do it says there is nothing to install or download and that it is up to date.

    So frustating.

Same as you i tried all the steps people are suggesting and nothing works. Just going to give up as it's a pointless waste of time.
