SQL Server 2008 64-bit installation error 0x84B20001

    Question

  • Hello,

I'm trying to install SQL server 64-bit and I'm getting the following error:

SQL server 2008 setup100.exe and setuppatch.exe cannot be run in this mode. If tou are running setup100.exe, start setup.exe instead.

    I can't find setup.exe for the 64-bit installation.

    What can I do?

    Thanks.

  • I think that you are trying to install from within the platform folder (ie x64, ia64 or x86).

Go up one level and there you'll find setup.exe

  • Hi OLAPWisdom,

I tried it and got a message about compatibility problems

Did you install SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2?

Since there is some compatibility issue between Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, if we install SQL Server 2008 on these versions of Windows, we will see this warning.

However please ignore this warning message and click “Run program”. We just have to patch it with SP1 after installing SQL Server 2008. The compatibility issue will be resolved by the SP1 of SQL Server 2008.

so I don't think it knows to automatically select the version.

Installation program of SQL Server 2008 will recognize the right platform. Meanwhile if you want to install SQL Server 2008 32-bit on 64-bit Windows, please follow the steps below:

    1.       Run the installation program of SQL server 2008

    2.       In the “SQL Server Installation Center”, please click “Options” in the left pane

    3.       In the right pane, please choice the type you want to install

If anything is unclear, please let me know.

  • But then how can I make it install the right version for the platform?

  • SQL Server setup will select the correct platform for you.

  • Have you actually tried that? I tried it and got a message about compatibility problems, so I don't think it knows to automatically select the version.

  • I would like to add comment here...

If you are on a Vista 64 bit system, and run setup.exe it will work BUT -

in the confirmation list if items, the "64 bit" item has a status of "non-applicable"

Can not recall the exact entry, but this indicates that the 64 bit version is NOT being installed automatically, else the 64-bit item would not have been listed as "non-applicable".

    Please advise

  • Hi OliphantJ

did you find solution to 'non-applicable'  issue? I am also seeing it when I am trying to install SQL server 2008 R2 on Windows 2008 R2.
