Class not registered (0x80040154) when trying to run Backup

  • Hi there,

When trying to run a "Windows Complete PC Backup", I am getting an error:

    Windows Backup
The backup application could not start due to an internal error:

    Class not registered (0x80040154)

Please check your system configuration and try again.

Vista Business SP1, fully patched. It used to work because I've done a few complete PC backups. But one day I went to run it, and I got the error. I can't find any info on the web; the error code seems to apply to many diverse situations, none similar to mine.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Hi John,

    Same problem here..

I'm on Vista Ultimate 64 bit.. SP1 - should be fully patched nothing more available on windows update!

Again.. really limited results looking for an answer on it.

    Did you find anything else?

I was told the MS Vista backup teams monitored this group.. I thought maybe they could provide some feedback!

  • G'day Tim,

Unfortunately, as you can see I posted in July, and never received a response. I had the problem until two days ago when I finally rebuilt my laptop as it was developing more and more funky little problems (cruft), so for now my backups are working again. I'm fully patched, so it doesn't appear to be a Microsoft patch that breaks it.

Software that was installed on the old Vista install and isn't installed on the new Vista install:

    Google Earth
    Jungle Disk
    Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1
    Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird (I very much doubt it is either of these)
Polar WebLink 2.4.3 (for synchronising a Polar watch to the web)
    Quicken 2008

It would be interesting to see if you have any of these installed on your machine.

  • Hey John,

    I have Firefox..
I do have quite a bit of other stuff installed to.
Should learn my lesson and setup a VM for testing new software.

    I wonder if I can try and re-apply SP1.

If not, I am planning on upgrading the disk soon, so I will do a rebuild.

Did you use anything good for backup in the meantime?

  • I used Symantec Ghost to back up the entire drive onto an external drive before rebuilding my laptop. On an ongoing basis I use Jungle Disk to backup my critical data to Amazon S3 (online storage). It's really cheap (a couple of bucks a month) and gives me that extra level of security.
