Hello I have been running windows 7 for about two weeks now and its has started giving me a black screen after it goes to a screen saver. It is setup on a domain that requires it to lock after 10 mins of inactivity. Sometime when i unlock the machine and type my password in it goes from the loging screen to the desktop just fine ,, but other times it just goes to a black screen and the only way i can get in to it is to power it off and restart it.. Now i have tryed the latest video drivers and even down loaded the microsoft kb patch . but it still is not fixed.. I am using dual monitors so not sure if this is the problem or not... Any way any input would be greatly appreciated...
System Windows 7 x64
8 gig of ram
Asus Mother board with latest bios installed
Intel icore 7 processor
Nvidia gt240 video card

I would like to confirm the result if only one monitor is connected?
You may try to update the BIOS and test the issue in Clean Boot.
Does it work?

Well I have found a sort of work around fix that is working for me so far, If i disable screen savers and also disable the auto lock with no activity and just manually lock the pc. I have no problem with unlocking the unit properly. so it must be some bug eather with the auto loc or the screen saver.. So for now I will just manually lok the pc when i get up to take a break , or I am finished for the day. Hopefully there will be a patch or something that may fix the issue.. I have exhausted all the other online methods of resetting the bois and so on....
My computer is not on a domain and I have the same issue.
However I have found that if I leave the computer alone, for anywhere from 5 minutes to two hours, it will start responding again.
There is nothing in the logs to indicate a problem. Task manager, if running does not show anything.
I didn't have a screen saver set, just the auto lock, so I will disable that and see if I have issues.
This article may address your issue:
We use group policy to force a screen saver after 15 minutes. We also prompt for credentials once the user comes back. It's only after the user enters their credentials that the black screen shows and the user is NOT presented with the desktop.
The hotfixes available will not apply to our systems either!
