  • After searching for about a week, i finaly found the solution for restoring a deleted Public Folder (Exchange 2010 SP3 ru7). At first i also got the "partially succedded" message. The reason for our "partially succedded" message was that the deleted Public Folder contains a unknown user (NT User: SID ...bla...bla...bla). ExFolder can't restore a Public Folder that contains an unknown user account.

    How to resolve this problem?

    - Get the application MFCMAPI (http://mfcmapi.codeplex.com/)
    - Logon a pc/workstation with an account that has full rights in Exchange and all public folders.
    - Open Outlook and create a temperary Public Folder. This one is needed to restore the deleted items from the deleted Public Folder. Give your self owner-rights.
    - Open MFCMAPI on a pc/workstation (NOT on the Exchange server) where Outlook is installed.
    - Click on menu [Session] and select [Logon]
    - Select the default Outlook-profile click the [OK] button.
    - Click on the menu [MDB], [Public folder], [Open public folder store...]
    - Enter in the field "CreateStoreEntryID flags" the following and click [ok]
    0x00000001
    (this is the entry "Openstore_use_admin_privilege)
    A new MFCMAPI windows opens
    - Expand "IPM_SUBTREE" (by clicking on the triangle)
    - Browse to the parent folder of the deleted Public Folder
    - Right click on Parent Folder and select [Other Tables], [Deleted Subfolder]
    A new MFCMAPI windows opens
    - Expand the Parent Folder. Here you can see the deleted Public Folder. The one you can not restore with ExFolder
    - Right click on the deleted Public Folder and select [Other tables], [Deleted contents]
    A new MFCMapi windows opens. In this window you will see all the items are stored in the deleted Public Folder.
    - Select the items you want to restore. (Ctrl+A is select all)
    - Click on the menu [Actions] and select [Copy messages]
    - Open the MFCMAPI windows where you see all the Public folders (the one with the "IPM_SUBTREE" on top of the list). Browse to the temporary Public Folder you made earlier.
    - Right click the temperary Public Folder and select [Paste...]
    A new MFCMAPI window opens
    - Leave "Move message instead of copy" unchecked. Click on [OK]
    All selected items are now copied to the temporary Public Folder
    - Switch to Outlook. In Outlook (re)create the deleted Public Folder (by hand) and set the access rights on this Public Folder.
    - in Outlook, copy/move all the items from the temporary Public Folder to the newly created Public Folder

    All MFCMAPI windows can now be closed. You now have succesfull restored the deleted Public Folder.

    Extra information:
    NOTE: even though you have an option "Restore deleted folder" in MFCMAPI. This option will fail because of the unknown useraccount in the deteled Public folder. In MFCMAPI it looks like you can delete this unknown user (in the view [open table], [ACL table]), but the deleted Public Folder is stored in a read-only location in Exchange. So you can't edit the ACL table!

  • Just a shot in the dark: If you have applied Exchange 2010 SP1, there is a new version of ExFolders.

    Exchange, meet ExFolders
    UPDATE 9/13/2010: Added the link to the Exchange 2010 SP1 compatible version of the tool.

  • I am having the exact same problem but we are not at SP1 yet, Exchange 2010.  I am also getting the "Recovery partially succeeded" message.  Tried MfcMapi with the Sept 2010 version and this also fails.  I can see the folder, but it can't find the content.  Any other ideas here?

  • Any update on this thread for public folder recovery.

    Also is EXFolders the only method of recovering a deleted Public Folder in Exchange 2010?

    Does PFDAVAdmin work in Exchange 2010? I know it was great in Exchange 2007 but don't know if deprecated.

    We use a D2D backup solution with Microsoft DPM 2010 and it backs-up Public Folders but its restoration is a Point-in-time recovery of the entire Public Folder database not an individual folder on the PF database.  Would love to see a granular restore capability down to the item level.

    No.  No more DAV in Exchange 2010.

    EXFolders is a replacement for PFDAVAdmin.  There are two seperate versions of EXFolders, one for RTM and one for SP1.  See the link Jon-Alfred Smith posted above.

  • Did anyone get around to fixing this? One of our users (still don't know who) deleted a Public Folder with 50+ subfolders and can't restore it via Outlook, ExFolders or MAPI. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Do you know who made the Public folder, or is it the root folder what has been deleted.

    I'm asking this because you have to have rights to recover the public folder.

    also on the folder you are trying to recover.

    What i've seen before that a user made is own public folder and deleted all domain admins from security rights.

    I have tried this on my Testsystem with Exchange 2010 SP1.

    Result:

    Deleted Messages in a Folder can be restored with ExFolders.

    When i try to restore Deleted Folders i get also "Recovery partially succeeded". No Folder is restored.

    Does Anyone have a resolution?

  • Microsoft tells us that this bug is scheduled to be fixed in RU4. Not sure if it made it into RU4 or not, but once they release it again we will find out! The fix will allow Outlook users to restore their deleted folders as long as they still exist in the dumpster. However, I was successful with Exchange 2010, SP1 using exfolders to restore deleted folders as long as you are connected to the server with the original replica on it. That was key. Good luck.

    Hi Andres,

    Please can you advise whether you needed to utilise a specific version of Exfolders in combination with Rollup 5 to be able to get around the 'Recovery Partially Succeeded' error?  We have a mixed Exchange 2007 and 2010 environment, with the main public folder store within the 2010 SP1 infrastructure, running on Windows 2008 R2 x64.

    After reading your post I was hopeful that the installation of Rollup 5 on the Exchange 2010 servers would enable me to restore a number of recently deleted folders but the recovery error message still appears.  I have tried the restore with the version of Exfolders that we've successfully used in the past:  14.0.715.00 and also the latest version (as far as I can tell): 14.17.97.0 but to no avail.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

    Rich

  • As far as I know RU5 does not contain the fix and RU6 just came out and doing a cursory review it doesn't appear to be in this release either but that said I haven't done a deep dive on all the details yet.  You can get the folders back via Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp however you need to do so from an offline copy of the PF Database NOT THE PRODUCTION COPY otherwise attempting to recover the data will fail.   Basically the steps to recover are to 1. Register and download DigiScope then 2. Contact Lucid8 Support by opening an online support ticket or calling 425.456.8464  and then 3. They will WebEx in to your system and push you a copy of EPM Lite which will allow you to grab a copy of the PF Database and then they can explain how to use DigiScope can get your data back.

    I was using ExFolders with FileVersion 14.2.5076.0. As already stated - with Update Rollup 5 i was able to Restore deleted Public Folders. With Update Rollup 3 this worked also. Only with Update Rollup 4 i was not able to restore the deleted Folders.

  • Well I know its a pretty nasty issue and they do have it on their radar to get done.  I have sent out some inquiries to see what the scoop is and if they tell me something that I can relay I will do so if its allowed, otherwise all I can say is that its in the works.

    I know it sucks to have to go to a 3rd party utility for recovery but if anyone is in a bind DigiScope can help you overcome the issue  http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp however you need to do so from an offline copy of the PF Database NOT THE PRODUCTION COPY otherwise attempting to recover the data will fail.   Basically the steps to recover are;

  • Hi Andres,

    Thank you for the swift response, at least I can rest easy that I wasn't missing a step when I tried within our environment.  I guess I'm now on the hunt for the 14.2.5076.0 version of ExFolders to see whether that will work for us, as it did for yourself but unfortunately I don't see a 'Previous Versions' section for ExFolders.  :-(

    All the best,

  • Hello People,

    Wondering if anyone has a workaround with this issue?

    We are trying to restore a folder in PF but no joy at all.

    Got exfolders 14.2.5076.0 with Exchange 2010 SP1 and rollup 6 but cannot restored folders in PF. Removed the rollup6 and install the rollup5 then run the exfolders but still not working.

    Tried to recover it from the outlook but gives " Outlook was unable to recover some or all of the items in this folder..."

    Microsoft suggests us to install the SP2 for exchange since it enables user to recover folder in PF directly from Outlo0k.

    We are planning to install the SP2 this weekend, see how it goes :)

  • This is what i have tested:

    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 3 à Restore works

    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 4 à Restore does not work à Recover partially succeeded

    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 5 à Restore works

    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 6 à Restore does not work à Recover partially succeeded

    Exchange 2010 SP2 à Restore does not work à Recover partially succeeded

    Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 1  à Restore works

    I think it quite a buggy thing - it's about 50% chance that it still works after the next Update Rollup

  • I recently escalated this issue with MS and the short story is that the "FIX" does not work on ALL Exchange 2010 implementations and they had no comment on when or even IF it would ever be fixed for ALL implementations

  • Hi Klausar,

    When you delete a Public Folder, neither the Folder nor the Mails in there are in the Dumpster of your Mailbox. These Items are in the Dumpster of the Public Folder Database. The Only way to recover would be with Outlook "Recover Deleted Items" or with ExFolders.

    But this does not work consistantly as you can see. In some Versions this works, and in some it does not. Actually it does not work - very disappointing.

    Yesterday I lost one of my Public Folders.

    My version of the Exchange 2010 is SP1 without Rollup... ExFolders tool crached...

    Today I update my Exchange Server to SP3 and restore delted public folder with ExFolders tool without any problems.

    Thanx for all...

  • We have Exchange 2010 SP2 RU5v2 installed and are experiencing the "Restore Partially Succeeded" issue using ExFolder 14.17.0266. I was however able to use MFCMAPI to undelete the deleted Public Folder without issue:

    1. Download the latest stable version from http://mfcmapi.codeplex.com
    2. Go to Sessions --> Logon.
    3. Go to MDB  -->Public Folder --> Open Public Folder store.
    4. Change '0x00000000' to 0x00000001' in the 'CreateStoreEntryID flags' section to logon using admin privileges.
    5. Browse to the Public folder root of the folder that was deleted by going to IPM_SUBTREE --> <Public Folder Root>.
    6. Right click the <Public folder root> and select Other tables --> Deleted Subfolders.
    7. Right click on the Public folder in the list that you want to restore and right click --> Advanced --> Restore deleted folder.
    8. Folder should now be restored.

  • This is a known issue at MS where the fix that has been added to resolve this problem does not always work and unfortunately the only way to resolve this is to use a 3rd party product like Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp that can open an OFFLINE copy of the DB to review and restore data to the production copy of the database OR to recover the entire database from a previous point in time.

  • Hi,

    I know that there are 3rd Party Tools, but that was not the question.

    As Andres (a few post up) posted, with some SP's an RU's the Tool works:

    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 3 --> Restore works
     Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 4 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
     Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 5 --> Restore works
     Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 6 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
     Exchange 2010 SP2 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
     Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 1 --> Restore works
     Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 2 --> Restore works
     Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 3 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
     Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 4 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
     Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 5v2 --> Restore works
     Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 6 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP3 -->Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded

    I just tested: Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 1 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded

    Does anyone know if it works again with: Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 2 ????

    Regards,

  • OK sorry I wasn't clear and;

    1. Yes this SHOULD work with 2010 SP3 Rollup2
    2. However that said if its not working that is because the fixes MS put out in the various patches only works sometimes, not all the time.
    3. We have spoken to MS about this and they said that if it doesn't work then the only option is to do a full DB recovery or setup another Exchange Server in same forest and restore the PF to that new server, extract the data and import into production.
    4. Odd I know you would think that they would be able to fix this 100% with a patch but alas they do not.

  • The thing is its very system dependent, i.e. from my talks with MS while they have put in multiple fixes they do not always work and last time I checked it was not a high priority to figure out why some systems the fix works and others it does not.   So your only choice is to restore a backup to an alternate servers PF to extract/import via PST or use a 3rd party product to access an offline copy of the database for restoration back into the production PF

  • Shure you can use an offline EDB Restore like Ontrack PowerControls or the one you mentioned. But it's a built in Functionality that just don't work. It does not work with ExFolders and not with the Restore Functionality in Outlook (tested with Outlook 2013 15.0.4623.1000)

    Sad Story for a long time....

  • Well its actually worse then that Andres, i.e. the patching works on SOME systems but on others it does not.  We have checked this against numerous systems in our labs and its completely hit and miss.  When speaking to MS they acknowledged it was shall we say a sporadic fix and they did not offer a way to track nor fix it further even when we offered up our test systems that failed and those that worked.  This tells me they are not all that interested in fixing it or simply cannot fix it for some reason since this has been happening for a very long time.

  • Hi,

    we had a similar problem today: We could not restore a public folder within outlook and we got the "Recovery partially succeeded" message in ExFolder.

    In our case, there was a mail in the deleted folder, which was bigger then the maximum allowed item size in the public folder database properties.

    After we disabled this limit, we could successfull restore this folder.

    Monday, October 20, 2014 4:39 PM

  • Hi there,

    Doing the MFCMapi Workaround might work. But this is a Standard Functionallity that is Built-In in Outlook and does not work eihter, if the ExFolders does not work.

    I have tried again with Exchange 2010 SP 3 Update Rollup 3 - hurray! it works again.

    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 3 --> Restore works
    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 4 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 5 --> Restore works
    Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 6 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP2 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 1 --> Restore works
    Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 2 --> Restore works
    Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 3 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 4 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 5v2 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded (Update by Alex)
    Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 6 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP3 -->Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 1 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded (Tested by Alain)
    Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 2 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 3 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 4 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 5 --> ?
    Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 6 --> Restore does not work --> Recover partially succeeded
    Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 7 --> ?
    Exchange 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 8 --> Restore works

  • I was able to restore a deleted public folder from Outlook 2013 with an Exchange 2010 SP3 RU8v2 backend.  ExFolders was failing with a partial recovery.   From Outlook, you need to select the public folder structure first, before selecting the Recover Deleted Items button.   Once I did that, the folder was recovered without issue.

  • I was able to use this method to recover some individual mail items from a mail enabled public folder.  Really was surprised that the Exchange Public Folder toolbox didn't have this kind of a feature in it.  Looks like the default setting is 15 days before it autopurges.  Personally I think i'll set it to 30 once I find out where to do so, it's probably a powershell command.
