Windows7 and Intuos Wacom serial tablet - no driver support?

    Question

  • when running the most recent (and only) Wacom driver for my Intuos GD-0912-R wacom tablet (serial, not usb), my computer recognizes the  tablet (I see it in the device list), but no matter how often I install the driver 613-5 (or even the 612-5 version), there is "no driver installed" and the tablet doesn't work.  It lights up when I use the pen, but it doesn't work as a pointing device.
    Can you please advice?
I've had this tablet for years, it works great on every other computer I've had.  I would understand a more limited support for Windows7, but nothing at all?  Can somebody please advice?
    Thank you

  • You need to install WacomTablet_605-7 -- you can get that from the Wacom website, that is the highest-version wacom driver that supports serial port tablets.  I got mine to work today.  Here are the steps I've taken:

    1. Download http://www.wacom.com/downloads/driver-detail.php?id=178
    2. Right-click on WacomTablet_605-7 and select properties
    3. In the Compatibility Tab select "Run this program in compatibility mode for" Windows Vista
    4. Select Run this program as an administrator in the Privelege Level group box
    5. Apply and close the properties dialog
    6. Run WacomTablet_605-7
    7. After WacomTablet_605-7 finishes -- reboot
    8. Once Win7 reboots you will have a functioning Wacom Tablet

I've done this on my own system running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.  Device manager still shows a warning triangle under Other Devices -> WACOM GD, but the Wacom 4D mouse and the Wacom Stylus both work.

    I hope this helps,

        Pavel.

  • Perhaps have a look at http://www.anotherblogger.com/2007/03/31/vista-hacks-making-my-wacom-serial-tablet-work/, there is a notice that someone made his serial tablet work on windows 7 32bit.

I was able to make it run on Vista with this informations and now I'm looking if that works for Windows 7 also.

  • Yes, my GD-0912-R really works on Windows 7. My DELL Insprion 530 does not have a real serial port, so I use a Skymaster USB to serial cable. I first had to install the correct driver for this. I found out that the driver is a Prolific usb-to-serial and I had to look for a working version in Windows 7.

In another forum I found a hint to that:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/4476-prolific-usb-serial-driver.html

and then got the zip file from there:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/attachments/drivers/5104d1235630557-prolific-usb-serial-driver-prolific-usb-serial-comm-port.zip

I first removed the power cable from the Wacom so that only the Usb-to-Serial cable is found. Then I installed the driver above. Now Windows 7 tells me which COM port it uses for that device. For me it was COM3.

That is important for the registry hack.

So I started regedit.exe opened the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and added the key "Tablet" and then added a new string "PnPTablets" and then entered the value ",COM3". (Notice: in regedit you don't enter the quotes).

Now i plugged in the power cable of my Intuos board and refreshed the hardware manager. It finds the WACOM device, but no driver.

Then I downloaded the latest Intuos driver in version 6.10.x, all newer drivers don't have the serial driver support integrated. So I used 6.10.6. You found it at the wacom if you search for Vista drivers of Intuos (and not Windows 7, these are newer than 6.10).

    ftp://ftp.wacom-europe.com/pub/WINDOWS/pro610-6_int.exe

Then I've installed the wacom driver and rebooted. And I'm happy again can will go to Windows 7 with my installation.

  • Hi Wim

Unfortunately, when a hardware manufacturer no longer supports a device with updated drivers, there is not a lot we can do, but there are some built-in options you can try.

See the following post for the basic steps to install the driver in compatibility mode for a previous operating system.

HOW TO: Install a Hardware Device Driver using Compatibility Mode

I recommend selecting a version of the operating system that was being used when that device was purchased.

If this does not work, contact Wacom Support to see what other options are available.

    Hope this helps.

  • I had the same problem.

I first tried with a copy of Windows XP installed on Windows Virtual PC (the windows 7 thing) and even though I managed to make my tablet work, it was too slow to be useful.

I grabbed VMWare Player, installed my old copy of Windows XP in it, and my tablet now works flawlessly.

But there's no other solution, I'm afraid... it still works very well and you can seamlessly copy/paste and share files between your "virtual" XP and Windows 7.

Hey Stefan, can you please keep us informed?  It would be awesome if you figured out how to make it work - I'm not savvy enough to know how to create a registry key, but I do know I miss my tablet.

    Thanks

  • Stefan, thanks man! Your instructions worked for me as well.

I am running the Keyspan Serial to USB converter. They have a new driver which works on Windows 7, so that was the easy part. Drivers found from:  (http://www.tripplite.com/en/products/model.cfm?txtModelID=3914)

I used the link you gave for the wacom drivers, and followed your instructions. My WACOM is working now. Thanks for your post!

  • Success!

    Setup:

    Windows 7 Home Premium x64

Intuos GD-0608-R (connected to serial port.)

Driver 6.10.6 (pro610-6_int.exe) (The one linked in Scherer's post. You can also get it by searching the European Wacom site; it won't appear in the Americas Wacom site.)

Here is the stream lined version of what I did.

    1.  Before starting, download the international driver version 6.10.6. and uninstall all 'Wacom' and 'Tablet/Pen Tablet' entries using 'Control Panel>Uninstall a program'. Also, unplug any other tablets.

    2.  Shut down the computer and connect the tablet to the serial port and plugged in tablet power supply.

    3. Turn the computer back on. (At this point the tablet showed up in 'Device Manager' under 'Other devices' as 'WACOM GD'. Because the computer recognized the device, I didn't have to make any changes to the registry.)

    4.  Right-click on the driver file and set compatibility mode to 'Windows 2000' and check the box for 'Run program as administrator'. Apply the changes. Install the driver and restart.

    5. When the computer started up again the tablet was working, however, there was no 'Wacom Tablet Properties' in the start menu and I couldn't find it elsewhere. (If you have it, then congratulations, you're done and can ignore the rest of this post. If not...) Right click again on the Driver file and change compatibility mode to 'Windows Vista' (leave the 'Run program as administrator' box checked) and apply the changes. Double click on the file to install the drivers again and restart. This should give you the functionality of the Windows 2000 patch with the properties shortcut of the Windows Vista patch. (Be sure to install it using Windows 2000 compatibility mode first. When I tried installing it first with Vista compatibility mode, the tablet did not work.)

Hopefully this works for you. Even if it doesn't, keep trying. I can confirm that a Wacom serial tablet works on Windows 7 64-bit without using a USB converter. Thanks to everyone in this thread for helping me out.

  • I wanted to say that I had previously used the method described above (Stefan's Post) -- when I was on Windows 7 32 BIT and everything worked fine. When I moved to 64 BIT, it did not work.

Hamms method worked for me though. I didn't even have to go back and rerun it as he did -- everything was fine. The GD still shows an exclamation point in Control Panel, btw, so Windows thinks it might not be working... but it is.

Thanks all! (You better believe I have THIS page bookmarked) Good stuff!

  • Hamms method just worked for me with an Intuos GD 12x12 (serial) on Window 7 professional 64 bit.  Many thanks, I had given up hope of using my cherished 12X12 again and started looking for a replacement.  This has saved me several hundred dollars, not to mention the frustration of retiring a perfectly good piece of hardware.

  • Just wanted to say a huge "thank you" for this thread.  I, too, had given up hope of using my Intuos GD-0912-R 9x12 Serial tablet.  Following Hamms' method, It is now working great with full pressure sensitivity and all in Photoshop, Mudbox, and all of my other apps.  The 4D mouse works as well.  I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64 with a USB Gear USB-to-Serial converter.  Thanks again!!!

  • hamms, if you're still following this thread, buddy, i gotta tell ya, heh...

the value of your contribution with this solution cannot be overstated.

on behalf of the apparent army of serial 9x12 owners who apparently take too good care of our tools for them to break down, and don't feel compelled or don't have the means to upgrade to the newer models of tablets.

...THANK YOU. it's crazy how some people just luck into finding such complex and convoluted solutions to these kinds of situations, but most people are probably apt to just be grateful their own stuff is working, and never bother/think to share the solution with the frothing masses that are in the position they were in.

i have avoided installing Windows 7 since its release, solely based in the fear that i would have to retire my (perfectly functional) tablet. this solution has given me the ability to leave vista behind forever (finally).

you have officially taken the torch from (imaybementallydisordered) to keep it going for the last of the serialites.

  • Thanks for this thread people, lets keep it going!

I got my serial intuos1 tablet working with hamms workaround, only thing I did different was UNcheck the run as admin box when installing in Vista compatibility mode. This gave me the Wacom options menu. Only thing I cant get working yet is pressure sensitivity in photoshop, works fine in alias sketchbook though. To be continued...

    My setup:

    windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

    serial port on mainboard

    serial intuos tablet (a5 and a4 )

  • Still no success )-:

Tried Koshevoy, Stefan & Hamsey's methods. Cleared all previous installation changes before trying next method

Running Windows 7 64 bit with no direct serial port using USB to serial adapter (Prolific with latest driver file version 3.3.11.152). My tablet is a GD-0608-R

The adaptor installed and runs driver recognised by windows appearing in device manager without a problem until I try to install the tablet driver

In only one instance have I managed to get the wacom driver installed without the yellow warning triangle on the Prolific adapter in device manager. This was using Hamm's method, but when I reinstalled the driver with vista rather than Windows 2000 settings the yellow warning triangle appeared again and the wacom driver was not recognised

At no stage has the tablet been functional as I have checked functionality with all settings

The only obvious difference to Hamm's description is that the Wacom tablet did not appear in Devices & Printers (Device Manager), only the Prolific USB Serial adapter

The Prolific adapter is using the COM3 port

The Wacom files appear in Program files (x86) > Tablet > (various files including Wacom folder) > Wacom > here Remove and an extension file are the only applications files. I cannot find a way to check or change which file running options to use such as the windows version or Run as administrator. The Security setting is set at Creator Owner. Right clicking these  application files only gives me a properties box as a sensible option and the only thing I can do here is to change the security settings to Administrator which I doubt would solve anything

I tried using Stefan's reg hack at this point ( using Hamm's method) since Tablet appeared to be the target file in the computer's search for a driver but after a restart this gave me no success either

It appears Mark Joel E3d & Migg 2011 have all had success using Hamm's method with a USB to serial adapter running a GD tablet. What could I be doing wrong???

  • @Mic2011, I am on Win7 using my Wacom Intuos serial tablet by using the driver WacomTablet_605-7.exe from the Wacom site.  It is specifically the last Win7/vista driver for the Intuos serial tablet.

In your case since your motherboard has a serial port, I see no problems and no need to perfrom all the other stuff.

It gives me full function of pressure and tilt in photoshop CS5 with no lag.  My PC is also several years old.  It should be no problems using that official driver.

  • Hamms procedure got my serial Graphire tablet (ET-0405-R) to work on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit!
I used the pro608-4a_int driver from Wacom.
I used the registry hack (http://www.anotherblogger.com/2007/03/31/vista-hacks-making-my-wacom-serial-tablet-work/) prior to installing, but I don't think it was necessary.
    Thanks!

  • u know I so wish this would work. I have tried everything I can think of, all the old drivers I can get my hands on and all the new. And nothing will allow me to get my tablet up and running with windows 7 64 bit.

  • After trying many of the proposed solutions mentioned, I finally got my WACOM GD-0912-R serial tablet to work (on Windows 7 64-bit Professional Edition) using Hamms method (see above -- thanks Hamms!!).

** BUT ** the essential thing in Hamms method is using a (high-speed) Serial-to-PCI card.
I tried using the serial port which is on my motherboard, but that didn't work. Neither did a Serial-to-USB cable.

Install a Serial-to-PCI card first and the most recent drivers (I used a Sweex PU006V2). Reboot and then follow Hamms method precisely.

A Serial-to-PCI card will set you back about $20 to $25, but at least that's better than spending $350 on a new tablet.

Good luck to all trying this.

  • I have exactly the same error as Trevzo

I have the exact same machine setup as him

"Running Windows 7 64 bit with no direct serial port instead using a USB to serial adapter (Prolific with latest driver file version 3.3.11.152). My tablet is a GD-0608-R"

Next to the Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port it shows an exclamation mark in Yellow.
The Prolific drivers are fine it just shows that the Wacom GD GD-0608-R drivers are not available.

    Any hints would be appreciated

I would rather not run out and get a $30 serial port board

  • Ok, here's my 2 cents:

First off, I run w7 64 "Ultimate" and own both an USB and a serial intuos(1)

Bought the serial new, back in the day, and picked up the USB for 50(!) euro at a flea market a few years back (w/o pen tho..) and started using the usb as it doesn't need the external power supply and was slightly less worn.

After changing around my desk and monitors recently it got a bit shaky from being too close to my (lovely, but not-so-well-shielded) Sony F520 monitor...

So I thought to see if the serial was as sensitive as the usb, and if I could connect both at the same time, one per monitor and using same pen, leaving the thinking-of-something-clever-to-do-with-the-keyboard for later..  =]

    What i did:

I first removed all wacom traces, drivers & registry, then got the USB going with the pro610 driver mentioned here.

I connected the serial with the comp running, tried installing drivers again (w2000 compatibility and then xp), no go. Still nothing after reboot.

Then I noticed, and this might be the helpfull bit:

My device manager showed it under 'Mice and other pointing devices' as a 'serial ball-mouse' (?!)

Uninstalled it and did a 'scan for hardware changes' (both from the dev manager) and now it showed as the GD-0912-R it is, under 'other devices'.

Installed the driver twice (w2k, xp comp) and tadah! It worked.

(No reboots, even when it asked to, and no change after I eventually did.)

And yes, it did show up as a second intuos(9x12) in the Wacom properties panel, with it's own pen/eraser/mapping settings, so you can set it up to use a monitor each, with one pen.

Fun for a bit, but too much of a workout to use for my taste... Also, I turned out not clever enough to think of what to do with the keyboard.

    Things I might still try:

Orientating one or both as "portrait", and/or putting the KB on top of the left wacom and map just a small portion of it for the second monitor. (But this somehow feels disrespectful to the wacom...)

    Good luck all,

    mK

And oh! It turns out the (my) serial is, if anything, more sensitive to RF from CRTs than the USB.. =/

  • This page is not large enough for me to convey my gratitude to Hamms, Stephan et al.

I have a new HP presario laptop with Windows  7 64bit. I used all my last credit to get this. 380EURO

I have a secondhand WACOM Intuos GD 0912R which I had not yet succeeded in installing on anything. 50EURO

I also bought a serial to USB 2.0 to RS232 adapter 18 EURO

I was VERY upset and angry that the tablet wouldn't work, having invested days and days of my precious and dwindling "upright" time and all my 50TH birthday savings into this project. (am recently disabled), This is REALLY IMPORTANT to me. NB real tears rolling down real cheeks.

Hamms thanks so much for bothering to post your solution.    The key to the success seemed to be in installing the correct drivers "6.10.6" thanks to Scherer, and then the DOUBLE installation of them using the compatibility as windows 2000 first, then reinstalling the same ones using Vista afterwards.

My secondhand tablet  now appears to work fully functioning. I restarted the computer following Hamms instructions and the mouse appeared not to work; being "stuck in the middle of my screen" HOWEVER this was because the tablet had taken over correctly, as mouse pointer and as I had never used one I thought I had broken the mouse drivers etc. HA! BRILLIANT.

OH, and OI! MICROSOFT!, YOU should be investing A LOT MORE of your HUGE PROFITS into supporting "obsolete" products. This will make you part of the solution and not part of the problem. We can't afford to throw away time, materials and knowledge on products which are perfectly capable of being adapted and re-used. This is one of the most important lessons to learn in life.

Me ha regresado el alma al cuerpo, ya no disponia de más dinero para comprar otra tableta actualizada, y esta me ha funcionado a las mil maravillas desde que la tengo.

    Mil y mil gracias.

  • Success!

Hi Hamms , my wacom xd 0912 r (serial) on Window 7 professional 64 bit with your system works. But when I restart the computer the next day, the tablet does not work anymore, the green light turns on to the tablet but the pen does not work. have you any solutions?

    thanks a lot Luca

  • If the tablet doesn't work the next day anymore, try to disconnect the power connector from the serial connector, wait 5-10 seconds and connect it again. This makes the tablet reinitialize, it works always for me.

Didn't got it working on Windows 8, taking the steps from Hamms or other. Is there another possibility to get it work ?

Tried al kind of drivers en point it to the OS it was mend for. Without any suc6. See Tablet under other devices and Wacom things under HID.

When uninstall an earlier driver before install another, do I have to delete anything I see from Wacom? Registry, dirs., etc.

Hope some one can help me out...

  • So this is all good info, but I still haven't been able to get my Intuous GD-0912-R to work on my computer. I'm using Windows 7 x64 bit and a Prolific USB serial adapter. This driver for my USB adapter seems to be working fine as it shows up in the Device Manager and I believe the Intuos driver is installing fine as well. My problem is that Device Manager doesn't recognize the tablet under 'Other Devices'. It simply shows up as 'unknown device' and not 'WACOM GD'. Under 'Mice' it recognizes the 'Wacom Mouse'.

I'm currently using 6.10.6 and tried running using "Vista" and "Windows 2000" compatibility and neither of those worked. I've also tried the registry key fix and that doesn't seem to work either. Thoughts?

  • Wacom Intuos 1 Serial-port tablet can works in Windows 8 x64
        with the『Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit』
    7fttallrussian.blogspot.com/2013/04/how-to-get-serial-wacom-tablet-to-work.html

    And my experiences:
    1、In the『select matching files』page of the wizard click『Select All』is not necessary
2、An other newer driver 6.1.1.3 might be the last version to support serial port tablet.
3、the function『Wacom tablet property』in 『control panel』not work.Because『WacomTablet.cpl』needs the file『WacomTablet.znc』.You can extract it form the driver archive『pro611-3_int.exe』,copy into『C:\Windows\SysWOW64』.Then you can adjust your serial-port Intuos tablet perfectly

Hope these may helps who loves painting with some freaky ideas ;)但愿我的英文没写错…

  • I'm trying to get my Intuous 1 to work with a serial to USB converter on Windows 7.

At first it didn't work at all, so I got a better serial to USB converter (Tronix ftdi). This was better as I finally managed to get the pen working using the Windows 2000 compatability mode. But then opened up Photoshop and there was no pressure sensitivity. I installed again with Vista compatability and it went back to not working at all. It's really frustrating. Does anyone know how to get it to work with the full pressure sensitivity in programs such as Photoshop etc?

  • prinzu, thank you very much for posting this solution for Windows 8!

I followed the steps in the link you provided and I followed your steps too. My pen and all its buttons work. But then I tried it in several paint apps (Fresh Paint, Sketchbook Pro, Bamboo) and there was no pressure and tilt sensitivity. Both are registered in Control Panel but not in any paint program.

Then I remembered the installation method for Windows 7 and installed the same driver additionally in Vista compatibility mode. Restarted PC and pressure and tilt sensitivity appears to be working as well. BUT the pen button's Right Click doesn't work anymore, in all the painting programs.

After this step, if I remove the Preference File (Reset), I lose the sensitivity again, but the Right Click works.

prinzu, did you test your tablet in any painting programs/apps? And if so, do you experience the same issues? No sensitivity, but Right Click working? Sensitivity working, but no Right Click?
