    Question

  • Hi I have just upgraded from Vista to Win 7 Premium on a new Toshiba laptop with 1 disk drive partitioned into C;(system) and D:(Data) drive. When attempting to run MS backupwritting to an internal drive i get a error message saying VSS has failed. In the Application log i get the following 4 entries (in the order in which they occur):

  • Hi NigelR,

I would like to suggest you temporarily uninstall AVG antivirus program to check the issue.

If it does not work, I also would like to suggest you export the following registry key as a backup and import the VSS service registry key for Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\VSS

    Good luck!

  • Yes, those entries seem legitimate, and there does not appear to be any "hints" in the other data that may lead one to investigate further.  I had thought that perhaps something may be pointing to a non-existent file, or that perhaps other software may have been involved.  But there is no indication that either is taking place.

Another GUID was referenced in the results - 4db9c793-c48d-449c-9754-46027ee45c94 - it may be interesting to search for that as well, but it may also just indicate that it is the "Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service software provider"...

  • Hi NigelR,

I am sorry to hear that the issue persists.

This time, I would like to suggest you perform a System File Checker.

If it still cannot work, I also would like to suggest you perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the system.

    In-place Upgrade

    ============

    1.    Start the computer.

    2.    Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive.

    3.    Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:

    a.     If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now.

    b.     If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:

b1. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK. Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.

        b2. Click Install now.

    4.    When you reach the Which type of installation to you want? screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows 7.

    Good luck!

  • Now much free space is there on the D drive and how much space is dedicated to the C drive? Are you also backing up the data on D drive?

  • Hi NigelR,

If you search the registry for 65ee1dba-8ff4-4a58-ac1c-3470ee2f376a and b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5, and poke around the hits a bit, do any strings (product or file names, etc) seem familiar?  Are any files you find referenced in values around that GUID missing?

  • Hi, I have about 30GB free on C: and about 50GB free on D:. I have tried to backup just C: and C:+D: to D: drive, the same error occurs.

    Thks for your response

  • Hi NigelR,

I am sorry to hear that the issue persists.

This time, I would like to suggest you perform a System File Checker.

If it still cannot work, I also would like to suggest you perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the system.

    In-place Upgrade

    ============

    Good luck!

  • Hi Arthur,

I ran the System File Checker and it did not find any inconsistencies, so i guess there is no point doing an In-Place Upgrade ?...Or will it alos repair any registry issues ?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi NigelR,

It is still necessary to perform the In-Place upgrade. In-Place upgrade will scan and repair the system files and registries except for the personal files. Of course, it will not remove any installed programs or saved data.

    Regards,

  • Hi,

I did the in place upgrade but the problem still persists.

I also note if try and enable System Protection via the Control Panel or My Copmuter > Propoerties I get an error message saying

"There was an unexpected error in the proprtery page. System Restore encounted an error, Please try to Run System Restore agin 90x81000203)"

I am begining to loose any hope of fixing this VSS /back problem.  I note a number of other similar posting with similiar VSS/Backup errors

    What to do now ??

    Thanks

  • Hi NigelR,

It looks like one group policy protect you from the configuration of System Restore.

I would like to suggest you perform the following steps to fix it.

Delete All Group Policy Registry keys

    ========================

    1. Click “Start”, type “regedit.exe” (without quotation marks) into “Search” box and press Enter.

    2. Locate the following key:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft]

Right click on "Microsoft", click "Export"; please name the file as "RegBackup" (without quotation marks) and then save it to the C:\ drive as a backup.

Note: In case we need to undo the modification, we can double click this RegBackup.reg file to restore the registry key.

    3. Highlight Microsoft and click "Delete".

    4. Please repeat the above steps for the following registry keys.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

Note: if some keys do not exist, please ignore them.

    3. Exit the Registry Editor.

    What’s the result?

  • Hi Arthur,

    Thanks for your continued interest..

I tried your sugestion above but with no success ( all the keys existed).

Trying to enable System Protection via the Control Panel or My Copmuter > Propoerties I get the same error message as noted above.

I note there are two other threads logging similiar Backup/VSS problems:

  • Hi NigelR,

Based on the current situation, I recommend you to backup all the important files to avoid data loss and reinstall Windows 7.
