Upgrading Windows 10 Home to Pro using Windows 8 Pro Key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a new Dell laptop that has an activated Windows 10 Home (1511) on it. I have a Windows 8 Pro key (a MSDN key that's unused for awhile). When I enter the key to upgrade, it refuses to activate due to wrong product.

Do I have to go the extremely long path of installing Windows 8 Pro -> Upgrade to Windows 8.1 -> Upgrade to 8.1 Update -> Upgrade to Windows 10? Surely there has to be an alternative? I tried slmgr /ipk in an elevated command line to no avail.

  • Ah, did some digging and found this link:

Basically, you just revert to a default Win 10 Pro key (VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T). This will upgrade Home to Pro. Since now you're on the "Pro" SKU, Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate and Windows 8 Pro keys will now work.

  • Hello

Home to home will work.  Win 10 handles key in an entirely different manner.  Win 10 pro users ALL have the same generic key ( VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T), but it is the activation ID (saved on the MS store servers) that is the unique bit.  Because of this you cannot use a "key" to change from home to Pro UNLESS you purchased a unique win 10 Pro key

  • Hi,

Yes, you cannot upgrade via this path.

Windows 10 (Version 1511) can be activated using some Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 product keys.

Thus please clean install the Window 10 1511 pro via this ISO file in the following website:

Windows 10 Tech Bench Upgrade Program

Afterwards, activate using your Windows 8 product key.

For other way, like you said, install Windows 8 pro and then upgrade to Windows 8.1 pro then Windows 10 pro.
