Using USMT to capture user data located outside users profile RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm looking at using USMT during our migration from Windows 7 to Windows 10.  We support many applications that have been allowed to save files to the root of C or other locations outside the users profile. We also support around 1500 non-Microsoft software programs. I'm worried that USMT is really not up to the tasks in our environment and was wondering if anyone else has used it in this environment to capture all the users data no mater where it is located on the hard drive.

  • Hi,

You have posted this in the wrong forum.

This is the Microsoft Assessment Planning toolkit forum.

However, at a high level I can answer this for you. Yes USMT should be fine especially when used with SCCM or MDT. You can specify locations outside of the users profile if you want OR you can configure it to look at any file type you want anywhere on the PC.

There are plenty examples of custom MIG files around on the net and if your interested I might have mine somewhere. Email me at if your interested and ill try to dig them out.

I haven't used USMT for years so im not 100% sure what has changed.
