SP1 installation failure, Code 0x8e5e03fb RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've tried several times to install SP1 for Windows 7. I've disabled my anti-virus program and any other program that I could think. I've disconnected the cable from my UPS. I've installed KB947821, the System Update Readiness Tool.

SP1 would not install through Windows Update (for which I got error code 8E5E03FB), so I've tried to do it manually, running the file named windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe .

I have a very long log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS, but I can't make much sense of it (it's 80,890 lines long). The error code comes up 60 times in that log file. Here is the last line (line 64,448) when it is mentioned:

  • The FixIt seems to work only with Vista. Can I do that fix when I'm running Windows 7?

  • It worked! I had to install the FixIt (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 )in its "aggressive" mode for it to work, but once I had done so, the installation of SP1 went very smoothly.

    Many thanks!

  • How does one go about getting the BITS service to run in safe mode?  I can only access my Win 7 x64 system in safe mode after the failed SP1 install.

    Thanks

  • I've always had better experience working with somone already on the same issue - it usually removes the silliness of the simple questions and cut-and-paste hopes for a quick fix posted by most online solution providers.

I've resolved the SP1 install myself...somehow.  I wish I could document the resolution as the two week process nearly made me restart with the original system image, which would have meant that I lost all the software I have purchased and downloaded since buying the laptop 14 months ago.

SP1 was a frustrating install and has slowed my Dell 1555 considerably.

I was hoping tha it would help with the BSOD issue and IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL issue that popped up since a Windows update sometime between the 22nd and Feb and the 5th of March.  No dice.  I have SP1 installed and still getting the BSOD, sometimes with a driver (various drivers) mentioned and sometimes a naked error.   This deserves a new thread and I'll start it today.

    Thanks,

    Hank
