AppLocker Policies Not Working in Windows 8 PRO (x64)

    Question

  • Hi Guys,

I have configured AppLocker policies on my clean installed Windows 8 PRO (x64) OS. I have also enabled the AppIDSvc (Automatic Start - Triggered Start), but all in vain. AppLocker still not blocking any .exe, script-files. Am I missing anything or Is AppLocker not functioning properly on Windows 8?

    Cheers,

  • Indeed there is a problem with Windows 8. I've re-installed the OS on my laptop thrice but unable to made AppLocker work.

All the rules are "enforced" and AppIDSvc configured to run automatic (Automatic - Trigger Start), but all in vain. Policies are not working for sure.

    My Question:

    1. Does Windows 8 PRO have AppLocker feature? Wikipedia says it have but I read somewhere that it does not have AppLocker. Can anyone confirm?

    2. Is there anyone who is facing the same problem? I don't know how many of you are using AppLocker, but it's a great feature. We are already using it in our company in Windows 7 Ultimate. So is there any one who is also having the same issue?

    3. Is Microsoft aware of this issue? Or is there any from MS Technical team who can help us on this regard.

    Many thanks!

  • Almost more than 24 hours but no response. Sad!

By the way, just to let you know others, I've enabled all the possible services but I am unable to make AppLocker work. To my surprise, I've tested the Software Restriction Policies in Windows 8 PRO (x64) and it worked. But AppLocker is not working. This is really annoying for those who wanted to upgrade but due to these policies glitches, cannot get their OS upgraded.

Is there anyone from MS who can look into it. And can fix it or issue any hotfix or update?

  • Hi Arthur,

Its not working at all. Even I am not sure whether AppLocker is available in Windows 8 PRO editions or not. On many Technet/MSDN articles it was clearly mentioned that AppLocker is available in Windows 8 PRO and Windows 8 Enterprise editions whereas on some other websites it was mentioned that AppLocker is not available in Windows 8 PRO editions.

I have tired to enable the policies in every possible way, but all in vain. Are you sure it's working in Windows 8 PRO editions??

Unfortunately, I've enabled SRP policies in our test systems. I hope someone from MS team clears our doubts.

  • AppLocker is not available on Windows 8 Pro, but only Windows 8 Enterprise edition.

See the following TechNet article:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831440.aspx#BKMK_Diffs

    From the article:

    Supported versions

AppLocker policies can only be configured on and applied to computers running the following versions and editions of the Windows operating system:

    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

    • Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems
    • Windows 7 Ultimate
    • Windows 7 Enterprise
    • Windows Server 2012 Standard

  • AppLocker is a great addition to Windows. I have been using it for months without a problem, in Windows 7 Ultimate. It's good to know my PC now has another layer of safety! Microsoft says they are committed to security. AppLocker should be included in every edition of Windows 8; then I could recommend it to my friends and customers. As it is, I cannot recommend Windows 8.

  • We had mostly Windows 7 Ultimate machines but have pretty much moved to Windows 8.1 Pro in our organization. We also have Small Business Server 2008, which is not likely to change for a few more years.

MICROSOFT really should enable Applocker in ALL versions of Windows. It's a no-brainer.

If we get hit by Cryptolocker, we will forward the bill to Microsoft.

    Have a nice day.
