Device Installer Error: "Windows could not load the installer for DiskDrive. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance."

    Question

  • Windows XP Media Center Edition
    SP3
    Emachine T5212

    Reinstalled SP3.
Uninstalled all USB devices in Device Manager.
    Reloaded all Intel motherboard drivers.

Error occurs after plugging iPod into computer.  XP finds new hardware and installs driver.  Device Installer Error then occurs.  Same error comes up when uninstalling most of the USB devices in Device Manager.  iPod works just fine on other computers.

This seems to be something related to the USB drivers in XP and not the iPod.  Many online forums suggest having the device plugged in prior to bootup and this does not make any difference in this case.  In order to stem the tide of replies referring me to Apple and the iPod drivers, without even having the iPod plugged in...if I try to uninstall a USB device from device manager I will get this error.

So lets look at it this way.  If I go into Device Manager and uninstall "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Conroller" I receive error, "Windows could not load the installer for DiskDrive. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance."

Here's another example of someone getting this error:
