Where to download bootable Windows 7 repair for USB? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Windows 7 on laptop without a DVD drive boots up but screen all blurred and corrupted so is not accessible and not usable. I guess I need a repair. I wonder where I can download repair files to fit in a 4G USB so that I can try to boot from the USB to repair. I have tried to press F8 while booting but to no avail.

The same laptop has a Linux system installed. I hope I can use Linux system to make the bootable USB with Windows 7 repair files.

11.it task me some hours to clean install xp on my computer and confirm below information.
    UltraISO Premium
    https://download.cnet.com/UltraISO-Premium/3000-2646_4-10177302.html
    http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/download.htm

since you said there a xp computer can work,so i think we can install UltralISO on xp computer and burn the win7.iso to your 4GB usb disk. after installing uiso9_pe.exe(UltralISO) on XP computer successfully ,
we can use UltralISO on trial.
    1 click "open" in "file"menu
2)select the "en_windows7_professinal_x64_dvd.iso" file which we downloaded before and click open.
3)select "write diskiimage" in "bootable" menu
    4)click "xpress boot" -->"write new disk mbr"-->USB-HDD+
5-6)make sure "disk drive" selected your usb disk(like my picture kingston usb disk),click"write" and waiting win7.iso burned in to your usb disk(like my picture kingston usb disk) .
7)after buring win7.iso in to your usb disk successfully,we can insert this 4gb usb disk to your issue laptop and reboot the issue laptop then change booting from this usb disk first by enter F12 (like below picture 7).

    8) look we can see win7 installation UI.

  • Windows 7 is no more supported by Microsoft. You can upgrade to windows 10 or continue using windows 7 on azure windows virtual desktop with security updates for windows 7.

  • I know but I’m a retired person. I can’t afford any extra cost at the moment.
    Friday, April 10, 2020 3:11 AM
  • I’m hoping to get not a full edition but a much smaller one to fit in a 4GB USB, like a repair disc or something similar as long as it does the job.

  • 1. The laptop came with Windows 8 but it has since been installed with Windows 7 pro. 2. I have had Ubuntu installed on a separate partition, just in case one day I can’t use Windows or when no antivirus software works with Windows 7. 3. I believe highly possible the screen hardware is not broken because it still works when it boots up on Linux.

  • Thanks a lot! I've downloaded the image file.

I started up the Startup Disk Creator from ubuntu. However it wouldn't somehow take the ISO file I had downloaded to be the source disc image. I wonder if it can detect and take only Linux image. If that is the case I have to somehow find a Windows system and use the Rufus program.

Please comment if you can! Thanks!

  • Thanks for all your help but I failed.

I followed the website to format the USB using the Disk program under Ubuntu and extracted all files from the disk image I downloaded from softlay.net to the formatted USB. I then tried to boot the laptop from the USB drive but it just bypassed and booted straight from the hard disk. I tried it on another old laptop of mine. It had the same problem.

I repeated the same process again and the results was the same.

The second old laptop has XP installed. I tried to run rufus program but it wouldn't work. Both laptops have ubuntu installed after booting from a USB drive. So their USB ports definitely work.

    Toshiba Satellite Pro C50-B

    Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS

8.could you borrow a window10 laptop and install rufus then burn win7 to your usb disk?
I retired in the bush and Australia is in lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic. I can't see I can access a Widnows 10 system soon.

9.did you format your 4GB usb disk to NTFS type by using woeusb?
I formatted the USB using Gnome-disks and took FAT by default.

I tried but failed to install woeusb.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
woeusb : Depends: p7zip-full but it is not installable
Depends: libwxbase3.0-0v5 (>= 3.0.4+dfsg) but it is not installable
Depends: libwxgtk3.0-0v5 (>= 3.0.4+dfsg) but it is not installable

I had followed https://itsfoss.com/bootable-windows-usb-linux/ -> Step 2 using the Disk program whose icon different from what is shown on the web page. It doesn't ask and there is nowhere to choose the partitioning scheme for either MBR or GBT. I guess this is where the problem is.

10.we can use below link method to verify your technet forum account so that you can post picture and website link.
I'm not sure what purpose of the link above. I've been able to post picture and website link without any problem.

By the way what program the image you attached for?
