User account unaccessible RRS feed

  • Question

  • I suddenly experience a strange problem:

I have 3 user accounts on my pc. They are in frequent use.

Suddenly - perhaps after a Windows update - I cannot see the accounts. Only my main account (which is also the administrator).

In user management I can create and delete an account, and I can give a password.
    Also new accounts.

But the accounts do not appear as possible accounts when I start the computer.

Any idea of what is wrong - and maybe even a solution ??

    Best wishes

  • Vagn L,

If you look at the user accounts on the computer under Local users and Groups from Computer Management, do you see the user accounts in question?  If the accounts do appear to still be there, try logging out and then using Other User to log back in with one of the other account names by manually typing it in.

It could very well be that you haven’t used the accounts that aren’t showing up in a while and that’s why they stopped appearing when you start the computer.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hello Mike

The two "invisible" accounts appear in Local Users and Groups. And the passwords are active (= never expire).

But I cannot log  on as Other User - is there a special way to do this?

    Can you direct me ?

  • Hi Vagn,

Do you mean that you can't see other account when you start the computer?

Can you switch users like the following picture?

Please create a new account and check if we can switch to the new account.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Fangzhou CHEN

I can create an account. But it does not show when I try to log out from my account (the only account visible).

I only get the log-off Picture for my own account.:

Does it make any sense ??

  • Hi Vagn,

Please take a look at the following thread and check if we have set the registry key.
This thread is about the Windows 7, but the Windows 8.1 is similar.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/16378967-8a39-4aef-85e4-d859a71648d3/hide-user-accounts-on-windows-7-logon?forum=w7itproui

Additionally, we could take the following steps to disable the display of last user name:
    1. Click start and in the run/search box type gpedit.msc{enter}
    2. Navigate to > Computer Configuration > Windows settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > "Interactive Logon: Do not display last user name".

    Best regards,

  • Hi Fangzhou CHEN

Thank you for your suggestion. I have tried to follow the thread and I have been digging even a bit deeper.

    No luck.

I still cannot see any other user than the administrator (myself).

Do you see any other way out of this problem ??

It seems a bit odd that it used to be working and suddenly stopped.

This article is about Windows 7, but the registry key also work in Windows 8.1.

Please check if this key exists.

  • Hi Fangzhou CHEN

I have the key but the user account still does not show.

I simply cannot see how to solve it. Except of course with a a complete new Win 8-install.

But that is perhaps a bit too much :-)
