How to migrate on-premise Site Collection to SPO RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hello SP Gurus - I am planning to migrate on-premise Site Collections to SPO. I have few on-premise Team Sites and few Publishing Sites. I know there is a SPMT (SharePoint Migration Tool). Should I create modern Site in SPO first and then use SPMT to migrate the content? OR Use SPMT will take care of the type of Site Collection need to be created along with the content?

Please advise. Any resource that will help me to plan migration would be appreciated.

    Thanks & Regards,

  • If you have not run any migrations thus far at all, you should probably make a site collection just for dry runs.

When migrating from SP on-prem there are a number of hurdles you may have to overcome:

    • web parts not supported in modern view
    • classic pages - may have to be converted to modern in SPO
    • objects relying on the publishing feature which is by default deactivated in modern sites.

It will be best if you try something and in case of errors post back here.
