Stuck in "Starting", all VM's on the host. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Running on Windows 10 Enterprise. Suddenly no VM's will start. The management console shows Status as "Starting..." but nothing happens even after waiting a long time.

If I connect to the VM it shows the VM as turned off. If I try to start it, it shows an error "failed to change state".

I have tried rebooting the host, which does not help.

I have added a new VM using an existing hard disk image, but the newly created VM does not start either.

The vmwp.exe process associated with the VM is using about 15-20% CPU.

  • In this case it turned out to be a compatibility issue between F-Secure Workstation Security and Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update. For further information, see the following article:

Turning off the Advanced Process Monitoring in F-Secure "Deepguard" settings helped.

  • Check your disk space?  Do you have your VMs configured to be saved in case of the host shutting down?  This demands there is enough room on the disk to capture the state of the VMs.  If there is not enough space, the VMs won't start.
