Windows 7 Won't Shut Down

  • Since applying Windows Update (microsoft drive update for realtek rtl8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20) ) on 12/11/10, Windows 7 64 bit on my HP pavilion notebook will not shut down.  After regular use and clicking shutdown or restart, it will start the process, log-off, but then hang in shut-down mode perpetually.

I have tried uninstalling the update; no improvement.

I have eliminated all temporary files; no improvement.

I have opened Windows in Safe Mode; it will start and shut down fine.

I have run a disk check; system is in good shape.

I have tested doing a shutdown and/or restart immediately after logging-in; this will result in a successful shut-down or restart.

    Any solutions?  Thanks.
