I had the exact problem and tried everything. All these posts and tips, searched high and low for a new driver. Nothing worked. I downloaded and installed Windows Live One Care and when it checked my system and told me about the DVD problem in Windows, It asked if I would like to fix it. When I told it yes, IT FIXED IT!! After months with no DVD drive I finally have it back.

  • See my other post about error 10. Also worked on code 39. Windows Live One Care is the best thing since sliced bread!!!!!

  • So I went to OneCare and paid for the full service, spent the whole morning downloading their package, and after a complete diagnostic OneCare didn't do anything to fix the driver problem.  I even went to the OneCare website and had a direct chat with one of their customer care people.  After explaining the situation with the driver failure and error code 10 she said that it was not something that OneCare was supported to handle.  So, I wasted a half of a day and $50.  Thanks for the great tip! :-(

  • try this guys

got it from here http://www.computerhilfen.com/hilfen-26-186214-0.html n thought i should share it with u guys ...

you must start regedit ( start -> run [See screenshots at the bottom] Type here: regedit )

    search the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
    search for "4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318"
if you doesn't find anything, search only for a part of the string.

now search the propertys UpperFilter an LowersFilter and kill the value. If only one prop. is there, you must kill only the one value

it works perfectly on my laptop ...

Yes, this did repair the cd/dvdrom driveletter to appear again on my Medion!
Delete in the registry filter written above the GEARaspiWDM only!
Google it. It is part of the latest iTunes 8.2 that couses this major problem.
    Shame on Apple...!

I tried that before and it didn't work, I have an acer aspire 2920z with a "hl-dt-st-dvdram gsa-t20n ata device" dvd driver and I have recently had to reset my computer back to factory defaults (for the second time since my warranty expired) and once I installed windows vista service pack 1 it has a (code 19) registry files are damaged, this also happened the last 2 times I installed this service pack but I went to microsoft who fixed the problem, but that same method doesn't work any more. I went to acer who said my computer doesn't have a dvd drive which didn't help at all. Is there any other methods to resolve this issue

I don't know how in the world you figured that out, but it fixed my computer when NOTHING else would!!!

This fixed my HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH40N drive.  And I hope I never have to find the driver for this stupid drive, because I can't find it online anywhere.  But now I don't need to - because you fixed my problem!  THANKS AGAIN!!!

  • Fantastic, works for me on an Acer 5920G that had Vista. After upgrading to Windows 8 the drive was just gone so I just set the key value for Upperfilter to 0. The lowersfilter was not there.

    Thank you very much!
