BCD Error RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to install SP1 on my Windows 7 32-bit computer I get the error:

The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
The requested system device cannot be found.

I have tried bcdedit /enum all and I receive the same error.  In Computer Management there is an unlettered drive.  I can't assign a letter to it.  The drive does not appear in the diskpart utility.  I would appreciate any help I can get.

  • Please try the following commands to repair BCD.

    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    c:
    cd boot
    attrib bcd -s -h -r
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    bootrec /RebuildBcd
    bcdboot C:\Windows

  • Hi ,

Did you install any storage related software like Symatnec Storage Foundation?

Try the following command line with elevated permission:

    Diskpart

    list volume

sel volume 1 (if volume 1 was the volume that hosts the BCD database.)

    online volume

    automount

    exit

Or try to assign a driver letter for the volume that hosts BDC database.

  • Run your command with elevated privileges (runas administrator).

  • I should have included that.  I ran the commands with elevated privileges, and still the same result.  This is not a dual boot configuration I only have Windows 7 32-bit installed.

  • This what I get:

    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

The store export operation has failed.
The requested system device cannot be found.

    When I execute

    c:
    cd boot

It takes me to C:\Windows\System32\Boot>.  There is no bcd file in that directory.
