"Cannot Copy File" Error Stops Xp SP3 Install

    Question

  • I have tried to install XP SP3 unsuccessfully several times now. I was hoping that the auto update version would be lighter and not conflict, but it is still the same story.

The error says that sprc0414.dll cannot be copied to the destination directory. I have tried installing this as the Administrator in Safe Mode, and I get the same error. I have a screenshot of the error here: Screen of error.

The end of the error log is as such:

  • Hi,

First Unhide all files and protected opeating system files

Then go the folder system32 and check whether mui  and 0414 is a file or a folder. If you see a file named "mui"  or "0414" with no extenstions then thats the problem.

Just rename the file mui and 0414 to mui.old  and 0414.old and continue setup.

    Issue will be resolved.

  • I tried it, mui is a folder and i don't have a 0414 file or folder.

It wouldn't let me change the folder name.

    Now what?

    Thanks

  • STAR51564, the advice given previously in this thread was specifically in response to the precise evidence posted by the original poster - it won't work for anyone else.  You need to provide all the similar detail for anyone to be able to advise you.

Can anyone come up with a piece of good advice here. I have been working on the problem for a week now, and I am close to giving up.....

    Thank you in advance: Kasketkarl

  • I had exactly the same custsat.dll file copying error as Kasketkarl above. After starting the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 installation, the following error appeared:

    - - -
    Copy Error

Setup cannot copy the file custsat.dll
Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert [disk name] in the drive you specify.

Click Retry to retry the operation or click Cancel
    - - -

However, it did NOT help to:

    - Retry the existing file location (even though the custsat.dll file existed there).
    - Use another custsat.dll file from another location.
    - Insert another XP SP3 Source disk

After several retries, the same error just reappeared. Clicking Cancel caused the SP3 installation to stop and roll back to SP2 (with a not-necessarily-true alert that your old SP2 installation may not work properly).

I googled extensively and finally found the following TechNet discussion:

    -----

Unable to install SP3 - stuck on copying ispcnerr.ht_
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itproxpsp/thread/30565460-edd9-4a30-a5a0-dc663e15aeb4

    [Basic cause/solution posted by ded09 on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 4:02 PM.]

    -----

The real problem was that the SP3 installation tried to copy the custsat.dll file into the subfolder path C:\Windows\network diagnostic\custsat.dll , but failed because the 'network diagnostic ' subfolder did not exist. This subfolder was incorrectly created as a 'network diagnostic ' file without any three-letter extension.

The SP3 installation's C:\windows\svcpack.log file also showed the following errors (it automatically tried to recopy custsat.dll several times):

    ...
2090.078: VerifySize: Unable to obtain Target file size: C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\custsat.dll
    2090.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error: C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\custsat.dll , Error = 00000003
    2091.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error: C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\custsat.dll , Error = 00000003
    2092.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error: C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\custsat.dll , Error = 00000003
    2093.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error: C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\custsat.dll , Error = 00000003
    2094.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error: C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\custsat.dll , Error = 00000003
    2095.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile retries failed: C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\custsat.dll
2095.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error:  encountered an error:, Error = 0000007b
2096.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error:  encountered an error:, Error = 0000007b
2097.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error:  encountered an error:, Error = 0000007b
2098.203: UpdSpDecompressOrCopyFile error:  encountered an error:, Error = 0000007b
    ...

Using the details in ded09's post in the Technet forum discussion linked above, here's what finally worked for me:

    1. In My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab > Advanced settings, check "Show hidden files and folders"; uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"; and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

    2. Locate the "C:\Windows\network diagnostic " file and rename it "network diagnostic.BAD ".

    3. Manually create a "C:\Windows\network diagnostic " subfolder.

    4. Retry the SP3 Copy File operation again. If it works and the SP3 installation proceeds, go to step 9 below.

    5. If Retry doesn't work, cancel the SP3 installation and let it roll back.

    6. Restart the computer and log back in as an administrative-level user.

    7. Check for the existence of the "C:\Windows\network diagnostic " subfolder. If it doesn't exist, create it.

    8. Run the SP3 installation again.

    9. The SP3 installation should run normally, and its C:\windows\svcpack.log will show the successful custsat.dll file copy operation as follows (note that two additional files have also been copied into the C:\Windows\network diagnostic subfolder):

    ...
    1721.625: Copied file:  C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\xpnetdiag.xsl
    1721.688: Copied file:  C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe
    1721.938: Copied file:  C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\custsat.dll
    ...

    10. Close everything and restart your computer to complete the SP3 installation.

    11. Log back into Windows; right-click your My Computer icon and select its Properties pop-up menu command; open its General tab and confirm that the "Service Pack 3" entry appears.

    You're done.
