Windows Socket Error 10106

    Question

  • I'm not sure is this is the problem to my computer, however, I have been having problems with this socket error and I think it corrupted my internet. I'm still able to connect to the internet, but every application I go to says its unable to connect. Some of the applications say that there is a windows socket error 10106. I have searched other websites and downloaded the socket repair tool, but it didn't work. I also tried doing a system restore and it says there is a windows socket error 10106, which I find kind of weird because this error shouldn't interrupt a system restore. I have a windows 7 home premium desktop computer if you were wondering what type of operating system I had. Please help me fix this error. I only had this computer since Christmas. Also tell me if I need to add details about my computer. Thank you.

  • Hi,

It's not recommended to install and use "repair tools" from untrusted resource.

    http://technet.microsoft.com/es-es/ms740668(v=vs.71).aspx

    Windows Sockets Error
     WSAEPROVIDERFAILEDINIT 10106
    Service provider failed to initialize.
The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized. This error is returned if either a service provider's DLL could not be loaded ( LoadLibrary failed) or the provider's WSPStartup or NSPStartup function failed.

First I suggest you run a virus scan to ensure the system security, the dll file might be infected by some malware or virus.

Mswsock.dll (service provider dll)under c:\windows\system32 is a process known as Microsoft Windows Socks, please manually check the file, it might be corrupted or missing, run sfc /scannow, see if it can detect and fix some error.

We can also use last known good configuration and check if it is helpful.

  • Is sfc supposed to close automatically right after it opens because the moment I try to run sfc it closes. Also, I did try the Last Known Good Configuration, but it didn't help solve the problem. I need to start sfc but it's not working for me.

  • Hi,

    Does anti-virus software detect anything?

Regarding to the SFC, if normal sfc fix fails, then I recommend you use the sfc in offline mode in recovery console\command prompt, please refer to guide in the following links

    example:  SFC.EXE /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows
