Activating an LTSB ver. of windows 10 on KMS server RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a standard 2012 r2 server that is our kms server. it authenticates for our OS's and our office.  Right now it authenticates for windows 7, windows 10, windows server 2012, windows server 2016, office 2010, and office 2016. The KMS server is something that i rarley come back to, so everytime i do, i have forgotten a lot of it.

We are going to be rolling out a “new” version of windows 10: Windows 10 2016 LTSB.

I *think* I have a new KMS key and I *think* im supposed to “install” it into my 2012 r2 kms server.

Do I need to install my LTSB KMS Key into my server (it already activate windows 10 enterprise OS’s)?

If I do, how do I do it?

<<< Do I need to install my LTSB KMS Key into my server (it already activate windows 10 enterprise OS’s)?>>>

Yes. This LTSB release requires a newer KMShost product key, because the older key named "Windows Srv 2012R2 DataCtr/Std KMS for Windows 10" was released before LTSB 2016. You need to obtain the newer WS2016 KMShost pkey ("Windows Srv 2016 DataCtr/Std KMS"), or, if you are not entitled to that product, consider another activation solution eg ADBA.

See the note in this blog post about Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB Edition volume activation:

If you are already running a Server 2012 R2 KMS server, it’s very easy to add the appropriate KMS key to activate Windows 10 2016 LTSB and Server 2016. If you have not already install KB3058168, download and install it here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=47622. This update allows you to activate a Windows 10 host from Server 2012/2012 R2. You will also need this update, depending on OS:

    Server 2012 R2 – KB3172614: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172614

Hint: if you’re already activating Windows 10 from your KMS server, you already have ALL required KB’s installed.

After you have the required hotfixes applied, add and activate you KMS key using these commands:

    slmgr /ipk <KMS key>

    slmgr /ato

You will need your highest available KMS key. It will activate everything below it. If you are licensed for Server 2016 Datacenter, add that key. It will activate Server 2016 Standard and Windows 10 2016 LTSB.

If you have already used MAK keys to activate any of these OS’s, you can use the KMS client keys to convert them to KMS licensing.

You can find these keys here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867(v=ws.11).aspx.

  • I'm confused.

For the "slmgr /ipk <KMS key> command that i will run on my KMS server, am i:

    1) running the key that is from the " https://www.microsoft.com/Licensing/servicecenter/ " page under "Find Product Keys"

    or

    2) am i finding the key from the " https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867(v=ws.11).aspx " page tht you referenced?

  • Also, how do you know that " If you are licensed for Server 2016 Datacenter, add that key. It will activate Server 2016 Standard and Windows 10 2016 LTSB."

Is there a flow chart of which key activate which other OSs?

Don [doesn't work for MSFT, and they're probably glad about that ;]

One is KMS host product key(Obtain it from VLSC and install it on KMS host server)and the other is KMS client setup key(install it on clients). You should run the key from the VLSC website.
