Solved: Windows Vista SP1 Update Error (0x8004401E)

    Question

  • I used the latest released file from Microsoft (Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0) to update Windows Vista to Windows Vista Service Pack 1, but after the stage 3 completes 100%, Windows says: "Service Pack did not install. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer."

  • I finally installed Windows Vista SP1 successfully. .NET Framework versions are actually related with Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) but after several attempts I can't make it work to repair the %systemroot%\System32\wbem\ directory. I saw that servicemodel.mof and other files in the folder are the same in other computers running Windows Vista, so I took the entire directory and copied it in the notebook with this problem, so, teorically you just need to copy the file. If you don't have access to other computers, please download the file and install it in the appropriate folder. Try Windows Vista SP1 Installation again and tell me if works.

    I hope this helps.

I opened a post with the same error message. I have tried the 5 generic troubleshooting steps with no progress. No information on this error code is available on support.microsoft.com.

Have you opened a ticket on:  http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=11732

I tried to earlier today - and was unable to because of an "Unknown Application Error".

  • Ok, if this file (%systemroot%\System32\wbem\servicemodel.mof) is missing you'll get the 0x8004401E error. I'm not sure but I think is related with:

    .NET Framework 3.5 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en)

    .NET Framework SDK 1.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b3a2ca6-3647-4070-9f41-a333c6b9181d&DisplayLang=en)

Update for Windows Vista KB930955 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9106b9d4-baa8-4c29-a605-a4d09c04a5f3&DisplayLang=en)

    We're close to the solution

  • Did you apply the update and .NET frameworks? Did it make a difference?

Open with any text editor the file %systemroot%\logs\CBS\CBS.log, find the string 0x80041315, then post here 10 lines prior to the error and 5 lines after the last occurance of the error message to see what is happening.

  • I had the same exact problem installing SP1.  I was getting desperate after my 4th attempt at installing - but thanks to you I installed the missing files you provided and SP1 installed on the 5th try!

Ok ThienTran, first just look for this file (C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) and upload it somewhere. If you can't, then attach it to a email message and send it to mswvsp1@enccompany.com

Remember that for Windows default installations, the file must be at: C:\WINDOWS\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

If you have doubts about this, you always can use this generic path: %systemroot%\logs\CBS\CBS.log

Yeah, is missing in many computers that use Windows Vista. Microsoft must release a tool to repair the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) to solve this problem easily.

You checked if the Task Scheduler Service is in automatic mode? If not, run %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc, and find the service Task Scheduler.

  • Hi!

I also have problem with installing SP1.

    I’ve tried installing SP1 about 10 times.

I turned off Windows Firewall and Windows Defender and Antivirus, disabled all startup programs.

    I received an error 0x800706b5.

Scan Memory and Check Disk didn’t find errors, but after scanning by sfc /scannow I saw error report: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log"

    Can anyone help me please?

Yes, there is a file wmicmiplugin.dll in this folder.

Is that so. mmm... okey, just let me do some more research. While I do that, if you have any protection program, deactivate/uninstall it while the update tries to complete the transition to Windows Vista SP1.

And please do check this: wmicmiplugin.dll (Size: 335 KB (343.040 bytes) + Version: 6.0.6001.18000)

I turned off all protection programs and disabled all startup programs before unstalling SP1.

Yes, my file has the same properties.

  • I have tried to install Sp1 on my Vista shuttle for two months now. I keep hoping that since this is a known problem Microsoft will include the fix in Windows/Miscrosft updater but even trying again last night it still fails. I have installed the files listed here and still nothing.

All that two months of tweaking has done is that I now have a WMI error as well. I am forced by the looks to do a full Vista re-install to get rid of that.

  • I also downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1, but after the stage 3 completes 100%, Windows says:"Service Pack did not install. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer."

My error code 8007045B.  My C:\Windows\System32\wbem contained the ServiceModel.mof and
ServiceModel.mof.uninstall.  However, ServiceModel.mof had a create and modified date of today.  .
So, I renamed them to something else, brought doown the zip file, added both the files and reran the Vista SP1 update.

    IT WORKED!!!! Thanks!

  • Thank you so much all you people out there!

I learned from this thread how to inspect the CBS.log and what to learn from it.

So the first thing not working was a missing ServiceModel.mof ...Uninstall.mof

When I downloaded the files at the first page - the install of the service pack did not work because of another .mof file missing.

Instead of simply retrieving this single file from somewhere I copied ALL files in the ...wbem directory from another Vista system into my ...wbem directory copying only files not present over there. (more than 50 of them.

I do not understand the details - but the next try to install the service pack succeeded - and the system feels great at the moment ;-)

    So again: Thank you all!!

    peterseth.

  • I also faced the same error twice yesterday & it seems it is somehow related to the Event log error 4201 - ERROR_WMI_INSTANCE_NOT_FOUND.
I set the permissions on system 32 to my username instead of localcomputer\administrator altough i am a member of the local admins as well.
    Disabled AV.
reset the ACL on the registry entries & rebooted. Thanks to Gary..

  • I get the error message 0x800F0826 after the last reboot and have the same issue as some posted earlier:
After the third step of installation finishes it says "Service Pack did not install. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer."

I checked my computer for the files that were mentioned in this thread and they are all there, I even replaced the servicemodel.mof and servicemodel.mof.uninstall with the ones from the .zip file.

When i check Windows Update for previous updates and check the error code for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 there is a diffrent error code than the one shown after the final reboot: 80010108.

I've had help from someone at Microsoft Support but all the help he or anything on the Microsoft webbpage gave me couldn't solve this problem!

Please help me solve this issue.

    Sincerely
    Charlie

The system is in Spanish (I live in Spain) and it it also has this entry for ServiceModel.mof (even though I downloaded the file from the .zip) - maybe I should try getting the other .mof files from someone although I don't know anyone else with Vista at the moment Sad

    Thanks for any help

  • Erm.............. What if my computer crashes when i am insalling SP1

    Monday, November 17, 2008 9:10 AM
  • ENC ROCKS!!!
Dude you totally saved me. I was about to commit computercide. I downloaded the files and extracted them to the desktop. Then I opened the folder containing the original files. I noticed that one of the files was an earlier version. So I replaced both by dragging and dropping the new ones off the desktop onto the old ones in the file. I had my doubts, but I have tried everything I could think of to install this thing. I'm guessing that these were the files that windows kept saying were "missing or corrupted" because SP1 installed perfectly! ENC for King!

  • Ok, so I have installed these files and receive the same error.  I have turned off the firewall, the virus software, and even change the conflicting Sigmatel driver.  SP1 still will not install.  Then I learned that SP2 will not include SP1, nor can you install SP2 without SP1.  So, should I wait until windows 7 or simply take a chance and revert back to XP.

    I have a Gateway, Intel D Processor 935 3.2 dual core.  2 Gb DDR2, Nvidia GeForce 8800GT.

  • Ok...same issue here but my system gets to a point and locks up.

    !!  0xc01a001d !! 37456/95388 (\Registry\Machine\COMPONENTS\DerivedData....)

I've tried reboot in safe mode - no luck.  System goes right back to doing registry updates and locks up at the above line.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

  • I just experienced the 0x8004401E “unknown error” while trying to install SP1 on Windows 7. On the previous five or six computers it went smoothly but one pc resisted. After reading this thread I copied servicemodel.mof from another pc. The two computers should have been identical but that was obviously not the case as the other had no problems installing SP1. After copying the servicemodel.mof file as suggested here I could install SP1. Thanks! :)
