Windows Search Service

    Question

  • PC will not start the Windows Search Service at all.  Never starts, just gives me the following error:

The Windows Search service terminated with the following error:
Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

    Log Name:      System
    Source:        Service Control Manager
    Event ID:      7023
    Level:         Error
    Description:
The Windows Search service terminated with the following error:
Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

    OS is Windows 7 Professional

    Have already done the following:

    1. Unable to run the troubleshooter, so don't ask me to do it again.  Can't run it because the Service doesn't run.  Fails every time.

    2.  Tried running the Fix it that Microsoft provides, didn't work. ( http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Searching-in-Windows-frequently-asked-questions )  Gave me three lovely red Xs and said it couldn't fix the problem, and then it couldn't contact Microsoft when it was done.

    3.  Tried logging in as a new/different user.  Made no difference.  The service does not start.

    4.  Tried editing the registry,  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search   SetupCompletedSuccessfully  Change it from a 1 to a 0.

Doesn't work because This computer is set to 0 to begin with.  Changing it to 1 doesn't do anything.  When you go back into the registry, it just changes it back to 0.

    5.  Ran a sfc /scannow .  It said there were no corrupted files.

I've researched the heck out of this, and from what I can see, I've done everything anyone has tried already.  Anyone have any other ideas?

  • OK, that didn't work.  When I went into the Services.msc and checked the Windows Search service after the second reboot (after disabling Windows Search, rebooting,  re-enabling Windows Search and rebooting) it said the service was Stopping.  Then I got the same stupid Error 183: Cannot create a file when that file already exists when starting the Windows Search service.

So, that's now 6 different things that I've tried to resolve this problem.  Any other suggestions before I have to re-install Windows for this guy?
