Windows 8 Pro WSUS error 800B0001

    Question

  • I am running WSUS on Server 2008 R2 x64.  I have Windows XP, Vista, and 7 clients connecting to it without any problems.  I recently installed Windows 8 Pro from my TechNet subscription on one of our workstations and I'm getting an error 800B0001 when I try to run Windows Update.  I have tried the fix found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2720211 already with no luck.  When I'm adding a new system to our network, I use a registry entry to enter the settings and another one to remove them when I'm finished (I have a computer repair shop so we see lots of computers come through).

    Here's the registry key used to instruct the system to look to the WSUS server for updates:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
    "WUServer"="http://192.168.5.23"
    "WUStatusServer"="http://192.168.5.23"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
    "UseWUServer"=dword:00000001
    "IncludeRecommendedUpdates"=dword:00000001
    "NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000
    "AUOptions"=dword:00000002
    "ScheduledInstallDay"=dword:00000000
    "ScheduledInstallTime"=dword:00000010

    Any ideas?  Thanks!

  • Here is the solution that worked for me.  The only issue I had was that my Windows 8 client still errored (different error than the 800B0001 error I had earlier) the first time I told it look for updates.  I had it check for updates a second time and everything worked as expected.  It was provided on another thread that I was following as well:

    KB2734608

    Issues that are fixed

    This update lets servers that are running Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.2 provide updates to computers that are running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

    Additionally, the following issues are fixed by this update:
    • Installation of update 2720211 may fail if Service Pack 2 was previously uninstalled and then reinstalled.
    • After you install update 2720221, health monitoring may fail if the WSUS server is configured to use SSL.

    Additionally, this update includes the following fixes:
    • 2530678
      (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530678/ )
      System Center Update Publisher does not publish customized updates to a computer if WSUS 3.0 SP2 and the .NET Framework 4 are installed
    • 2530709
      (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530709/ )
      "Metadata only" updates cannot be expired or revised in WSUS 3.0 SP2
    • 2720211
      (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2720211/ )
      An update for Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 is available

      Note Update 2720211 strengthens the WSUS communication channels.

    Notes
    • After you install this update, Windows Update Agent (WUA) will be upgraded automatically.
    • WSUS must be in a known, good working state for this update to work. WSUS must be able to synchronize from Microsoft Update, and clients must be able to communicate with the WSUS server. • The update mention in the following link needs to be installed on the WSUS Server.

  • As I mentioned in the original post, I've already gone through that process and it has not helped at all.

  • I'm having this same issue and have also applied the update in KB2720211 and rebooted the WSUS server, but the issue is still not fixed. Interestingly enough, a Server 2012 RC VM can get updates from my WSUS server just fine, but the Windows 8 Pro RTM VM gets error 800B0001.

  • The answer is realy simple.

    Windows8 RTM use a newer WUClient that a WSUS 3.0 SP2 Server offers.

    The result is, the client doesn't trust the server.

    The KB2720211 doesn't solve the issue, because it was distributed in June of this year (Please take a lock in your update history and you can see that update is allready installed).

    At the Moment the only thing you can do is to wait until MS dirstribute a new WUClient. What you also can do is to create a GPO for Windows8 to direct communicate with the updateserver from MS

  • Microsoft and Arthur Xie - When can we expect an update to fix this huge problem?

  • I installed update KB2734608 on my WSUS server.  Windows 8 clients are now able to check for updates.  However when it goes to install them, I get error 80246003:  Windows Update ran into a problem.

  • I had the same issue the first time I had a client try to connect.  Click "check for updates" a second time and see what happens.

    That didn't make a difference.  I even tried stopping the windows update service, deleting C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution then restarting the service.

  • Thanks and yes this is the same problem using 2008SBS and Win 8 Pro.

    The SBS server shows the PC as waiting for Vista updates to be installed. Hope this helps you guys at Microsoft to create a fix for the SBS 2008 server.

    The updates worked fine before I joined to the domain so I know it is not a simple update issue.

  • KB2734608 worked just like you mentioned.   My Windows 8 clients update properly and no longer receive the WSUS error 800B0001 error message.

    Thank you.

  • I installed KB2734608 (x64 version) on Windows 2008 R2.   I rebooted the server after successfully installing this update.    I ran Windows update on my Windows 8 PRO laptop and the error 800B0001 no longer appears

    The update also corrected the Operating System type on my WSUS server.   Windows 8 PRO ( x64 ) was showing Windows XP PRO x64.

  • FIXED! Thank you so much!

    After installing KB2734608 (x64 version) on Windows 2003 R2 (even without restarting) our Windows 8.1 Client PCs started updating properly - The error 800B0001 is gone! :-)
