Windows 8.1 - "explorer.exe - Application Error" during shutdown process
-
Hi,
After I upgrade to Window 8.1, i get "explorer.exe - Application Error" dialog every shutdown.
It contain: "The instruction at 0x74fd40b9 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.Click OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program."
(Sorry, my account can't post link or image. So i can't show you the picture capture)
When I had used Window 8, it didn't happen.
Please help me to solve this problem.
My machine is: HP ENVY DV6 7214nr.
Thanks,
Tan Nguyen

Hi,
Please disable the DLNA Shell Extension to prevent for a test.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions]
Under Shell Extensions, create a new Key named Blocked. In the right pane, create a String value named {289AF617-1CC3-42A6-926C-E6A863F0E3BA}
More info, you can refer to this blog.

I resolved the issue by "refreshing" my computer which removed windows 8.1 upgrade. I then reinstalling windows 8.1 upgrade and other programs the refresh function removed.
Haven't seen the error occur since.

Hello,
I test it without success... Disabling DLNA Shell Extension doesn't prevent explorer error at shutdown !!!
Does anyone have another solution to propose? Curiously, it seems that most of hardware involved are HP laptops... Could it be any of specific devices/drivers/softwares that triggers the error?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Philippe

Hello,
For my side, it seemed that it was "user dependant"; creating a new user account and using it seemed to solve the problem. The explorer error didn't occur anymore. It is less work than refreshing windows 8...
Analyzing the difference between the old account and the new one, as far as I test it now, it seems that it is the google drive client running or not that triggers the error.
Disabling google drive client in an account removes the error; re-enabling it restarts the error at shutdown or account switching or account logoff, no matter if it is done on the new or old account.
Does it make sense for anyone else?
Philippe

I am having the issue when shutting down windows 8.1. Did not occur before the update with Windows 8. At shut down, Pop up displays for only a few seconds. HP Envy I7.
Explorer.exe - Application Error
The instruction at 0xa73640b9 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to termintate the program.
When I start the PC, and shut it down after a few minutes of running, this error does not occur. Only after the PC has been on for awhile and I have used several programs.
And for those of us unfamiliar with creating a Reg entry, the instruction are not very clear. Once I create this text file...what do I call it and where and how do I insert it....?
UPDATE Problem fixed: I followed the suggestions of a Windows 8 clean boot from Microsoft.
After going through the running applications one by one, I finally isolated the problem on my HP Envy to the Bluetooth Application. I disabled the Bluetooth task in Startup and made sure it did not load. Afterward, no more Explorer.exe - Application Error when I shut down the PC. This program is a Ralink Bluetooth driver and exe. program running on startup. I am not sure if HP has offered an updated driver for it as of yet.....

Caution: After Id'ing the Bluetooth issue, I then went to HP site and downloaded and installed new Blue tooth driver for windows 8.1. This caused my pc to blue screen and fail to load. I had to restart in safe mode and restore pc to previous restore point....

This does NOT work. It has nothing to do with the problem. The cause of the problem can vary system to system and so will the solution. I think the dev team should answer this and release some patch as it is affecting a whole lot of users !

The problem turned out to be the Bluetooth driver and related service with Windows 8.1 (as someone had mentioned on this thread...). I removed the bluetooth driver and service from startup and this error has gone. I hope Hp has released some driver update for bluetooth to solve this issue with Win 8.1

I was seeing this error in Server 2012 R2 at every shutdown or restart executed from the Start tip (instead of the Settings charm). After disabling the shutdown event tracker via local group policy the message stopped appearing. To disable the shutdown event tracker: Windows Key+R (run...)>gpedit.msc. Expand Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates and left-click on System in the left pane. On the right pane you should see Display Shutdown Event Tracker. Set it to disabled! (Screenshot of error and fix shown below).
