windows 8/ login issue/Your PC is offline. Sign in with the last password used on this pc. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am sure I remember my password. On my win 8 pc, when ever I try to login using my Microsoft account password @ offline state I get this error "Your PC is offline. Sign in with the last password used." when I try to login while I am connected to internet I get an error msg stating that my password is incorrect and that I should visit account.live.com to reset it. I signed in using the picture password set on my computer and went to the user options under "change your pc settings" and changed my MS account password successfully. but again when I restarted the computer and tried to login I got the same set of error messages. what do I do now ?

  • What does Security and System Event Logs say?

Could you test your account in another computer?

  • Hi,

Also, you need to make sure you have already connected to Internet.

  • Hi,

You need to check the Security log. It includes the logon events.

  • Hi,

You may try the wired network instead of wireless.

  • thanks for guiding me. I have pasted  a part of event log under security. does that make sense ? and I want it to work offline so there is no question of connecting to wired connection.

  • Hi,

The logs show your logon is success. Do you find any failed logs? post them here. Also, we need the complete logs that include log descriptiion, etc.

  • folks I had the same problem and did a hardware reset today what brought the surface back in the factory default setting. I lost all data but that was no problem for me I kept all apps coupled to my live login. There is even a command prompt in the reset window you can use to fix things.

You can find it by pushing shift and press the restart button on the screen (corner right).

  • oh and after that I created a local login so that is not screwing my day again :-)

  • I am at no situation to do a hardware reset, I don't want to loose any data. And from the very beginning I had created a picture password which I use to login to my computer even if connected account password fails.

  • there are no failed log ons As I have also set up a picture password which I use to login everytime my connected account login fails.

  • Can anybody help me out ?

  • I had same problem!  Bas Kersten is partly correct.  There is also an option that keeps all of your data files but will remove all of the non-win 8 applications that you may have installed.  However it puts a file on the desktop that will show you the applications that it removed.

    This fixed my problem.

In the future put all of your data files in cloud storage like dropbox.

  • Bas, your answer was a great help!  However not that you will find that there 2 options available when you do the refresh.  One option allows you to keep all of your data files but remove the non Win8 applications, and the other option removes everything.

    Thanks for posting your solution.

  • What I did is to remove my hotmail account from the laptop and no more offline problem just create a regular windows user!

  • Password computer asks for from your Microsoft's Hotmail account (Outlook), offline says for not connected to internet also, I could not log in for need of password (not knowing Outlook password accepted on setting not only Outlook email  account at last login for computer's but user account also), just login using Outlook email account's password, if not accepted for no network  connection, just login as administrator -> connect to internet -> ctrl+alt+del -> switch user -> select your username -> enter Outlook email account password.

    Best of luck
