Remove PreInstalled Search Engines form IE 9

    Question

  • hi,
I have a situation where I am supposed to remove the pre-installed search engines / Search providers from the IE 9 installed on Windows 7 32 bit machine.
I was able to set the home page /favorites from the IE9AK customization wizard, it allow me to set the Default search provider.... but question is how I can
delete/uninstall the rest of the search providers. ? I just want Google as default and all other should be removed.
If I go tot the HKLM\Software\MS\IE\UnattendBackup\Search scopes ... I can see the regisrty entries... If I delete the entry, search engine still there.
Any recommendition how to solve it?

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your update.

I understand that the remove button is not acceptable and you have already tried to remove the registry keys, the issue persists.

Based on my research, I suggest you reset IE settings:

After that, please remove the search providers again.

Note: When trying  to remove the search providers from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes, please restart the computer to check the result.

  • Hi,

You can remove the rest of the search providers by the steps below:

    1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.
    2. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
    3. Click Settings under Searching, click the search provider and click Remove, click Close.

You can also remove the search providers in Registry Editor:

    1. To start the Registry Editor, click Start, type Regedit, and then press Enter.
    2. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes.
    3. Right click SearchScopes, select export and save to desktop as a backup.
    4. Expand SearchScopes list, please check the Display Name in the subkey and delete the registry keys of the search provider which you want to remove.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Della Li

I guess I have already mentioned it my post that deleting the registry key didnot delete the search engine (see the screenshot).
Deleting form the IE options is not the acceptable way in my situation.
